No joy for Jonny

Jonny Wilkinson missed a penalty with three minutes to go as Newcastle lost 25-23 to Northampton on Sunday.

The former England flyhalf, who has changed his kicking style to prevent further injury, pushed a relatively straightforward kick at goal wide that would have won the game for the Falcons. Replacement Toby Flood’s drop-goal then fell just short of its target.

Saints dominated the first half after a try from David Quinlan but only led 13-6 at the break.

Wilkinson kicked two penalties and tries from Anthony Elliott and Wilkinson put the Falcons 18-13 up.

Saints drew level through Mark Robinson, Ben Woods hit back for Newcastle but Ben Cohen’s converted try clinched it.
