Joost van der Westhuizen got so carried away with the Springbok win in Rustenburg that he incorrectly presented John Smit with the Freedom Cup.
The cup, played for by South Africa and New Zealand, this year involved the teams’ three matches in the Vodacom Tri-Nations. The All Blacks won the cup by beating the Boks 35-17 in Wellington and 45-26 in Pretoria, yet Van der Westhuizen gave the trophy to a confused Smit.
SuperSport then failed to acknowledge their mistake, presenting All Black captain Richie McCaw with the cup off-air.
SA Rugby’s Rayaan Adriaanse told planetrugby that the incident was unfortunate and admitted New Zealand had won the cup 2-1.
Meanwhile, SuperSport’s post-match interviewer, Garth Wright, embarrassed the country further during his chat with Mils Muliaina.
“I’m sorry for you, but for the Springboks we’re happy,” Wright told the shocked All Black fullback, before turning back to the camera. “Well that’s Mils Muliaina … let me tell you something, he looks a little disappointed, he should be disappointed. I want to tell you, I’m so happy for the Springboks, I’m happy for South Africa.”
