The Vodacom Western Province coach confirmed that Fijian winger Sireli Naqelevuki is not on the run from the authorities.
A report in yesterday’s edition of the Fiji Times stated that Naqelevuki, an officer in the Republic of Fiji Navy, had not obtained leave from work, and had also not been cleared by the Fiji Rugby Union to play with WP.
The consequence of this negligence is the arrest of Naqelevuki on his return home, as well as the possible fining of WP and the docking of points on the Absa Currie Cup log. But a particularly unphased Kobus van der Merwe told keo.co.za that the situation is not nearly as sensational as it has been made out to be.
“I think that it has been blown out of proportion,” he said. “I have spoken to Sireli about it and he seems to have everything in order with the union.
“He has also organised extended leave to ensure his playing with us doesn’t interfere with other commitments.”
The 25-year-old Naqelevuki has now been with the Cape Town side for close on six weeks, and has played three consecutive games against the Pumas, the Sharks and the Vodacom Blue Bulls. He scored two tries on debut against the Pumas, and has proved to be a very destructive runner.
