Scorers:
Springboks: Tries: Fourie du Preez, Breyton Paulse; Conversion: Andre Pretorius. Penalties: Pretorius (3); Drop goal: Pretorius.
Wallabies: Try: Stephen Larkham; Conversion: Stirling Mortlock; Penalties: Mortlock (3).

78min: The Aussies try to launch an attack, but lose possession once again at the crucial moment. They receive another chance and run with purpose into the Bok 22, but some awesome defence forces another turnover.

72min: Some good SA defence forces the error by the Wallabies, and Du Preez hacks it all the way into the Aussie in-goal area. The Boks start another attack and control possession well through the phases, and a corkscrew movement by Paulse in the tackle sees him gaining enough momentum to reach over and slam the ball over the line. The touchline conversion attempt is wide by Pretorius (4/7). 24-16 SPRINGBOKS

67min: Paulse and Pietersen break up to the Aussie 22 and the Boks are looking good for the score. The next phase, however, sees Spies knocking on.

65min: The Wallabies ghost through some abysmal Bok defence, and the five-pointer looks imminent, but Paulse makes a timeous interception and kicks clear.

63min: Pietersen drops the high-ball put up by Larkham, and Venter catches the rebound in an offside position. Mortlock gets the Aussies a little closer (4/5). 19-16 WALLABIES

60min: Palu breaks from the back of the scrum and gets within 5m of the Bok tryline. The ball bounces free, but the Boks are all offside. Mortlock keeps the Aussies in the hunt with another three-pointer (3/4). 19-13 WALLABIES

56min: The Boks win another penalty in the Aussie 22 and Du Preez catches the Wallabies napping and powers over the line. Pretorius has found his rhythm and adds the two (4/6). 19-10 SPRINGBOKS

51min: The Boks counter-ruck well enough in their own 22 to win back the ball, but the clearance by Olivier is a poor one, and so the pressure remains. Mortlock makes a break but can’t find support and the Boks are able to regroup. Paulse gets the ball off a quick line-out and kicks it down into the opponents 22. Latham’s kick is less admirable, gaining about 3m. The Boks win the line-out and Pretorius hits a drop goal from the right hand side of the field. 12-10 SPRINGBOKS

48min: The Wallabies are penalised once again and Pretorius will try and chip away at the visitors’ lead. It’s a great kick and now there’s only a point in it (3/5). 9-10 WALLABIES

45min: The Boks do well to turn it over but then concede possession just as easily. The Aussies line up on the left and Palu pops the final pass to Larkham who scores the game’s first try. Mortlock adds the extra two (2/3). 6-10 WALLABIES

42min: Rathbone begins the half terribly by holding on to the ball, and Walsh awards another penalty to South Africa. Pretorius kicks his second consecutive penalty, and the Boks are into the lead (2/4). 6-3 SPRINGBOKS

37min: The Aussies are penalised and Pretorius will have another crack at goal. He strikes it beautifully and the home team finally gain some reward for good play (1/3). 3-3 LEVEL

34min: Venter is penalised for hands in the ruck, and Gregan calls up Shepherd to kick the goal. It’s a monster attempt of 60m, and although Shepherd’s kick has the legs, it doesn’t have the direction (0/1).

30min: A smart break by Pretorius initates some enterprising attacking play by the home side, and the Aussies are eventually called for transgressing in an attempt to halt the momentum. Pretorius has another shot at goal and is unsuccessful once again (0/2).

26min: The Aussies try a switch off the line-out to Rathbone who is hit by Spies in a tackle that sends the ball flying forward. The Boks are called for obstruction at the next rolling maul and Larkham kicks into centre field. Pietersen gets back and the Boks are awarded the scrum when the ball doesn’t emerge.

23min: After a lot of kicking from both sides, SA finally decide to run it through Wanneburg. The Boks send it wide, and Pierre Spies makes a beautiful break and floats a pass to Fourie. The outside centre switches with Olivier, who is tackled and hounded by the Aussies on the ground, and with no SA loosies in sight, Walsh awards the relieving penalty to the visitors.

21min: The Boks look promising on attack, but the Wallabies turn it over on the ground again. Latham clears and the chance to hit back is gone. At a subsequent ruck, the Aussies are penalised for offsides, and Pretorius points towards the posts. This is a big kick, 50m out. He pulls it very badly (0/1).

18min: Larkham puts up the bomb but Pietersen fields well under pressure. SA butcher a line-out and the Wallabies attack slices through the line. When the tackle is made, referee Steve Walsh calls the Bok loosies for slowing the ball down. This time, Mortlock is on target, and the first points are on the board (1/2). 0-3 WALLABIES

12min: Larkham hits a perfectly weighted kick into the Bok 22, and Du Preez needs to speed back. Elsom applies the pressure and the SA scrumhalf has to carry the ball over his own tryline. The Aussies scrum well and attack through Larkham but Pretorius goes for the interception and knocks on. The Aussie concede possession again and the Boks are able to clear.

10min: Waugh poaches a ball at the ruck and the Aussies send it to Rathbone’s wing. The Springboks defend well and eventually Fourie du Preez clears up to the Aussie 22.

6min: The Aussies win the line-out and maul well. BJ Botha is penalised for pulling the maul down, and Mortlock will have a chance to open the scoring. He’s pulled it, and the Ellis Park cheer in appreciation (0/1).

2min: The two teams size each other up with a series of kicks, and the duel between Pretorius and Latham is won by the Aussie, whose kick rolls out 15m from the Bok tryline. Matfield is secure in the line-out and Pretorius is able to clear.

Kickoff: Conditions are perfect up on the Highveld today, with not a cloud in the sky and little wind to speak of.
