Tri-Nations in crisis

A lack of interest in this year’s Vodacom Tri-Nations has given Sanzar plenty to think about.

Only 48,000 fans turned up to Ellis Park on Saturday, despite the Boks’ win at Rustenburg, where just 26,000 paid to watch. Sydney was also only half full when the Boks played the Wallabies for the second time, which suggests the expanded competition has become stale.

“The bottom line is that we have too much rugby,” Saru president Regan Hoskins told Independent rugby writer Peter Bills. “Obviously we have commitments to TV but it’s something we need to look at. The TV people must be concerned as well.”

Hoskins believes it’s not possible to get full houses for the extra Tri-Nations games.

“Maybe as individual unions we need to look at our own situation to see about changing ticket prices, marketing games better or having more fanfare. We must look at the entire picture.”
