Hair today, gone tomorrow

George Smith has cut off his trademark dreadlocks and donated them to a cancer charity.

“I wouldn’t expect much for them, but anything for the charity would be great,” Smith told the Daily Telegraph.

Smith’s distinctive dreadlocks have been one of the more bizarre talking points in international rugby.

All Black flanker Jerry Collins was caught on television yanking them in a match this year while the Boks denied claims they had been betting amongst each other as to who could pull one out.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve had a haircut, so I thought it was about time,” Smith said. “It wasn’t the pulling. I felt it would be good to get rid of the long hair.”
