Bay of Plenty all but sealed a place in the New Zealand Cup quarter-finals when they thrashed Hawke’s Bay 35-7 on Friday night.
The Steamers scored five tries to one and now have 10 points in Pool A of the repechage section. They will now qualify for the knockout phase regardless of what happens next weekend.
In front of a small crowd at Blue Chip Stadium in the Mount, the Steamers had the game wrapped up after 30 minutes as three tries gave them a 22-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Counties Manukau and Manawatu saw their quarter-finals hopes end when they played out an error-riddled 25-all draw in the repechage match at Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium.
