North Harbour claimed the Ranfurly Shield for the first time in 21 years when they shocked Canterbury 21-17 in Christchurch on Sunday.
Two intercept tries allowed Harbour to trail just 14-17 at half-time but they scored the only try of the second half with a well executed backline move in the 67th minute that gave Fijian wing Vialame Waqasduadua his second touchdown of the match.
Harbour then withstood wave after wave of Canterbury attack in the dying stages to hold on for a famous win. And fortunately for the new holders, they won’t be required to defend the Log o’ Wood this season.
Canterbury now turn their attention to Auckland next Saturday while Harbour head to Hamilton on Sunday to take on Waikato.
Canterbury - Tries: Scott Hamilton, Cameron McIntyre. Conversions: McIntyre (2). Penalty: McIntyre.
