Judge grants Saru appeal

The Spears hopes of taking part in next year’s Vodacom Super 14 suffered another setback on Tuesday when SA Rugby was granted leave to appeal.

On 4 August, Judge Davis said the Spears were entitled to participate in the 2007 and 2008 Super 14. Now, the same judge has given the national rugby body a second chance.

“The effect of today’s decision is to suspend the order granted earlier, pending the hearing of the appeal,” said SA Rugby acting MD, Basil Haddad. “To expedite the matter, our legal team will attempt to secure an early date for the hearing of the appeal.”

SA Rugby would not comment further on the matter.
