Vodacom Western Province coach Kobus van der Merwe has called for the chastening of JP Nel, as the Vodacom Blue Bulls centre has received three yellow cards in the competition.
Van der Merwe has said that he would like to see some consistency in the application of the tournament rules, as in a previous case involving Sharks lock Johann Muller, three cautions in a season warranted a disciplinary hearing.
“Nel has been shown three yellow cards and they were for incidents away from the ball,” he told Die Burger. “Johan Muller had to attend a hearing after his third yellow card. No steps were taken against him, but he was shown his cards for different reasons than Nel.”
Muller’s transgressions were deemed to be of a more technical nature by the judiciary, and so he was allowed to continue his season with the Sharks team.
Nel’s offences have included a high tackle against the Valke on 23 June, as well as cynical play when he killed the ball against Griquas on 29 July. The third offence came in the crunch game against the champs last Saturday, where Nel and Jannie du Plessis were sent to the sidelines after a brawl broke out.
It remains to be seen what will transpire, and although Van der Merwe has a valid point, the allegations could be a tactic of unsettling the Bulls team ahead of the semi-final at Loftus Versfeld.
