Ollie slams Sharks

Cheetahs captain Ollie le Roux has laughed off David Campese’s remark that the Free Staters play boring rugby.

The former Wallaby winger let rip in a newspaper column over the weekend. “In my opinion, the Cheetahs are not an exciting team to watch,” he wrote. “They are a team that waits for their opponents to make mistakes and capitalise on the weakness. I have been shocked to hear people say they throw the ball around a lot because I certainly haven’t seen them play like that.”

Ironically, the Cheetahs topped the log playing “boring rugby” and finished with the most tries and best points difference out of all eight teams. They also beat the Sharks home and away during the Currie Cup, to add to their Super 14 victory in Durban.

An angry Le Roux told the Daily News on Tuesday that, “I don’t know where David Campese gets that from. I don’t know what rugby he has been watching because we scored some of the best tries of the season when we played the Bulls on Saturday. We played expansively and took the Bulls on out wide.

“Anyone who believes what David Campese says doesn’t know about rugby. And maybe that’s why the Sharks haven’t been playing well lately, because he hasn’t been giving them proper advice as a consultant.”

The former Bok prop said the Cheetahs played the game tight when the situation demanded it.

“If being predictable won us the Currie Cup last year, then I guess we’ll just have to be predictable and win it again this year,” he said.
