Following the Vodacom Blue Bulls 45-30 win over Vodacom Western Province on Saturday, a woman was killed and her husband sent into a coma when the quad bike they were riding collided with a tree.
Martie and Piet Badenhorst, both 38 and Bulls fans, were on the grounds of Zonderwater Prison at around 21:45 on Saturday when they swerved to avoid a car and hit a tree. Martie died on the scene, breaking her neck when she fell off the quad bike. Piet hit the tree head first and is currently in critical condition at Eugene Marais Hospital.
The other vehicle disappeared after the incident, leaving behind shards of broken indicators and headlights.
The owner of the quadbike, Richard Swart, explained that the accident was not alcohol-related, as Piet, the driver of the bike does not drink.
“Everything went so well at the weekend – the Bulls beat Western Province. And then the accident took place,” he told Beeld newspaper.
“He was really nervous of quad bikes. I can’t believe he drove too fast, but it’s possible he got a fright [when he saw the other vehicle] and accidentally opened up the hand-controlled throttle.”
While Piet remains in a coma, Martie leaves behind two daughters, Bianca and Angelique. Police spokesperson Katlego Magelo said that there would be an investigation into what may amount to culpable homicide.
