The Absa Currie Cup final will have no impact on the selection of Jake White’s Springbok squad.
The Bok coach and his selectors chose the 28-man touring squad last Friday. The names will be released to the public on Saturday, after the Bloemfontein decider.
“A good 80 minutes in the Currie Cup final won’t get a guy into the team,” White told The Star on Thursday. “We’ve looked at performances throughout the season, including the Super 14, and have selected a squad for the job at hand, but also with an eye on the World Cup.”
While White is expected to include several new caps, including Lions centre Jaco Pretorius and Cheetahs fullback Bevin Fortuin, he said he would opt for experience on tour, especially against England.
“You don’t beat England with a young and exciting, but inexperienced team,” he said. “You need a core of experienced, hard guys who have been there before and who know how to win.
“We’re certainly going to give some new guys a chance to show what they can do, but it’s important they come into a side with an environment they can settle into, be comfortable with and where they have seniors to turn to.”
