Wellington bashed Auckland 30-15 at Eden Park on Friday night to move into the final of the New Zealand Cup.
Having last weekend dumped Canterbury out of the competition at the quarter-final stage, Wellington outplayed the defending champions in their own backyard.
Auckland got off to the perfect start when Isa Nacewa scored a try after just three minutes of the semi-final, but Wellington responded soon after when Conrad Smith brushed off Isaia Toeava to score in the corner.
Another try from former All Black skipper Tana Umaga and two penlties from Jimmy Gopperth gave the visitors a 18-5 half-time lead.
Toeava gave Auckland hope with a try soon after the interval, and the hosts then closed the gap to three points through a Ben Atiga penalty.
But when prop Neemia Tialata crashed over for Wellington’s third try, and Jerry Collins grabbed another after a break from Cory Jane, the result was put beyond doubt.
Wellington will play Waikato or Otago in the final.
