The Blue Bulls added the Absa U21 trophy to the Loftus cabinet with a deserved 25-16 victory against the Golden Lions.
The Pretoria side led 7-6 at half-time, thanks to an opportunistic try from Len Olivier. The Lions made a hash of an Olivier kick downfield, and the fullback was on hand to pick up the loose ball and score under the posts.
The second half was as tight as the first and with seven minutes to go the Bulls led 18-16. However, a slick backline movement saw centre Dylon Desmontuin send replacement winger Petrus van Rooyen away for the match-winning try.
Earlier in the day, the Blue Bulls won the Absa U19 competition when they beat Western Province 22-21.
Province went into the game as favourites having topped the U19 log, winning all five matches and beating the Bulls. However, it was the Pretoria youngsters who rose to the occasion in front of a small crowd at Vodacom Park.
The Bulls also won the women’s competition this year.
