Luke’s season stalks Jake

Luke Watson continues to haunt Jake White with the Western Province flanker nominated as one of South Africa’s five players of the year.

Pity White if he has to make the award to the player of the year and it is a guy who he believes is not good enough to make the top 60 in South African rugby.

Watson missed out on White’s original squad of 40 in May this year and even though White rested 15 contracted Springboks for the end of year tour, Watson has not made the squad. White, in his national coaching tenure, has picked nearly every loose-forward in the country except Watson.

The official awards will be on November 1 and SARU on Wednesday released the finalists in all categories.

Spies, along with Watson, is among the younger brigade to threaten established stars like Victor Matfield and Os du Randt.

Spies, despite minimal Super 14 involvement and just three tests caps, has been nominated for player of the year.
