Vodacom Cheetahs fullback Bevin Fortuin can’t wait to join up with the Springbok squad.
Fortuin is one of four new caps in the squad, along with Hilton Lobberts, Jaco Pretorius and Francois Steyn. He is also the only representative from the Cheetahs team that shared the Currie Cup final with the Bulls last Saturday.
While most players go mad when hearing of their Bok call-up, Fortuin’s celebrations were relatively subdued.
“I was happy when I heard my name read out, but I wasn’t as happy as I could have been because we had just drawn the Currie Cup final. If we’d beaten the Bulls, it would have been so much better.
“I think the news only sunk in on Monday, and since then I’ve been really excited and nervous.”
Fortuin made the step up from Currie Cup to Super 14 rugby with ease this season, and is hoping for similar success with the Springboks.
“I really hope I can do well for the Boks if I get game time,” he said. “I’m joining the squad later today [Thursday] and am really looking forward to it.”
With Percy Montgomery being rested for the tour, Fortuin will compete for the No 15 jersey will JP Pietersen and Francois Steyn. However, now that White is keen to play Steyn on the wing, Fortuin should start at least one of the Tests against Ireland and England.
“It’s going to be a huge challenge,” he said. “If I do play I will give 150% and hopefully reward the faith the selectors have shown in me.”
