The Celtic teams enjoyed a dream beginning to this season’s Heineken Cup when they toppled some of the big English and French sides.
The most notable victory of the weekend was that of the Ospreys over Sale, by a solitary point, Shane Williams starring with a brace. This was the first of three Welsh wins, as the rampant Llanelli Scarlets trounced London Irish 32-25, while the Cardiff Blues also did the job against Bourgoin in a scrappy affair that saw them eventual 13-5 winners.
The Irish were in equably good form, Ulster whipping Toulouse 30-3. Brian O’Driscoll’s Leinster also enjoyed similar success in this the opening round when they overcame Gloucester 37-20, scoring four tries in the process.
The Scots began the weekend well, Border Reivers dishing out a 35-3 hiding to Overmach Parma. But Scotland were denied a double-win when French club Agen pipped Edinburgh late in the game, kicking a last minute penalty to take the spoils at 19-17.
In other matches, Stade Francais were too strong for Calvisano, picking up all five points in their convincing 45-10 away win. Perpignan also accumulated maximum points from their fixture at Treviso, but the victory was only secured late in the match when they scored two tries in the final ten minutes.
