Jake White again defended his Bok selections as motivated by size and physical presence.
White, whose Boks played a practise match against the Lions under 21, told the media that size was everything when playing the northern hemisphere teams up north.
He painted a picture of an imposing Irish and England pack and said he simply had to match size with size. The coach, who two years ago spoke of the vulnerability of Irish loosehead John Hayes, now boosted Hayes, saying he was a converted lock. Which means nothing when he is playing loosehead prop and for the past three years has been considered the weakness in the Irish tight five.
White’s Boks that trained on Thursday had Bevan Fortuin at fullback, Jaco Pretorius and Francois Steyn on the wings and Ricky Januarie and Andre Pretorius at halfback. Albert van den Berg and Johan Muller were the locks.
The Boks will play another practise match next week.
