Jake White was smiling again after Thursday’s practise session against the Golden Lions U21 side.
The Bok coach had expressed his disappointed with last week’s training sessions, and urged his players to up their game. According to reports, the Boks were faultless at training yesterday, and this in pouring rain.
“I am very satisfied with the improvement the guys have made since last week,” White told Beeld newspaper. “We paid more attention to defence today and I thought we did well, apart from one or two little slip-ups. The structure was also much better.
“We also received a bonus when they [the Lions] kicked so much from behind the mauls. I think that was because our defence was so sharp. They did not really have other options.
“This gave our wings and fullbacks an opportunity to work on their fielding of high kicks. [Irish scrumhalf] Peter Stringer is not fond of kicking but we expect some high ones from [flyhalf] Ronan O’Gara.”
In some more good news for the Boks, prop CJ van der Linde and lock Johan Ackermann, who had struggled with a hamstring and a thigh injury respectively, both took part in training.
