White: Size does matter

Jake White has again emphasised the importance of player size in Test rugby.

The Bok coach is a firm believer that bigger is better, which explains his continued snubbing of Luke Watson and Kabamba Floors.

White on Sunday watched England’s match against the All Blacks, and was impressed by the home side’s forwards.

“The England pack is huge. I know I picked the right guys for this tour and after seeing the size of the men in action at Twickenham I wish I had even bigger guys here with us,” he told the Independent’s Jacques van der Westhuizen.

“I know we are going to miss Bakkies [Botha] a helluva lot… there are not too many guys his size doing the rounds in South Africa, but we need the other players to now stand up to the Irish and English.”

Meanwhile, the Boks trained with the new Gilbert Synergie for the first time on Monday.

The ball, which will be used at the World Cup, is said to travel further and more accurately, while the manufacturers have said that it sticks to the hand like a glove, making handling and passing easier.
