Gary Gold will coach Western Province’s Vodacom Cup and U21 sides next year.
The former London Irish coach arrived in Cape Town two years ago under the impression that he would become head coach of both WP and the Stormers.
However, director of rugby Nick Mallett gave the job to Kobus van der Merwe, with Gold as technical director.
Now Gold finally has teams of his own to look after, which should please him and Van der Merwe, as the two have clashed several times in the past.
The WPRFU sent out a press release on Monday in which they insisted the restructuring was not a step down for Gold.
“Gary was given the option and he certainly could have remained in the position he occupied this past 2006 season,” it said. “However, he has bought in totally to the bigger picture where the preparation of the young players is of paramount importance and has gladly and excitedly accepted his new role.
“Gary’s contract has been extended until the end of 2009. Obviously, this does not preclude Gary’s expertise being utilised when required for the Vodacom Super 14 and Absa Currie Cup.”
