Fantastic Fourie is No 1
21 Nov 2006
Jaque Fourie is SA Rugby magazine’s Player of the Year.
Fourie may have bizarrely missed out on a nomination for Saru’s equivalent award, but he got our vote simply because he excelled for struggling sides throughout the 2006 season.
He was played out of position on the wing during the Vodacom Super 14, and scored a hat-trick against the Blues after returning to the midfield late in the competition.
Fourie picked up a knee injury at the start of the Test season, but stormed back to score three tries in the Vodacom Tri-Nations. Unfortunately, his season ended when he broke a hand just days before the end-of-year tour — a massive blow to the Bok backline.
Other award winners in this collectors’ edition include:
– Luke Watson (Comeback of the Year)
– Pierre Spies (Rookie of the Year)
– Rassie Erasmus (Coach of the Year)
Also in the magazine, on sale Wednesday:
– Gary Botha, Ollie le Roux and Jonathan Kaplan on the Absa Currie Cup final.
– Kabamba Floors: Why my height shouldn’t matter.
– How Heyneke Meyer built the Bulls empire.
– Hilton Lobberts on his breakthrough season.
– Bevin Fortuin on being a Bok.
– Tiaan Strauss is back in South Africa.
– Nick Mallett and Naas Botha look ahead to the Vodacom Super 14.
– Keo on why SA’s high-performance academy only creates the illusion of transformation.
– Who knows Phillip Burger better, his dad Thys or Cheetahs centre Hendrik Meyer?
– World Cup countdown.

21 Nov 2006, 12:07 pm
I wouldn’t day he’s the best player this year, because he hasn’t done that much.
BUT
Think the only reason he’s been chosen is because the others were so k@k.
But he’s a very good player in a kak team.
21 Nov 2006, 12:09 pm

Jizaaaaaaaaaaaz you guys need to sort out your cover designer, that looks like a flashback to style magazine in mid 80′s.
Keo, that “Wham” vibe went out along time ago with Andre Aggassis’s highlights!
21 Nov 2006, 12:32 pm
Thats actuaaly hilarious, looks like Back street boys album cover!

I told you long ago I never find the SA Rugby at the local store. Should start looking for the GQ… They should be next to each other. Stupid me… and here I thought the SA Rugby would have rugby players on it.
21 Nov 2006, 12:36 pm
Whashappening Grr?
You must be ecstatic about the lions?
21 Nov 2006, 12:37 pm
ha ha, there was a very good joke on 5fm now.
Jake phones Rassie up for some advice:
Jake: Rassie I’m on the top of the stadium roof with the lights and panels, what do I do now?
Rassie: Jump you F*CK!
21 Nov 2006, 12:37 pm
Skim
Nothing much boet. Been away for awhile. What news about the Lions??? What did I miss???
21 Nov 2006, 12:38 pm
Skim Boks are pathetic. Find myself looking forward to the S14.. Would love to see Robbie Diack, Luke, Schalk? etc play instead of this bunch of losers calling themselves die springbokken
Fuzz, I’ve been saying I’m tired the past three weeks!!
21 Nov 2006, 12:40 pm
Lions playing in the Super14 my man….
Provvas,
I can’t wait to see what Brent can do!
21 Nov 2006, 12:41 pm
O that! Yip, pretty glad about it.
21 Nov 2006, 12:42 pm
JW aan sy seun: Fetch me a beer as quick as you can.
Son :”Like Kabamba?”
JW: “No quicker man!
Son: “Ok I’ll pretend to be Luke Watson!”
21 Nov 2006, 12:43 pm
9.Bolla(underrated)
10.Brent
11.Sereli
12.Jean
13.Uys
14.Paulse
15.Aplon
now that’s a backline!
And we have depth:
Sarel Potgieter
Joe Petersen
Rayno Benjamin
Jongi Nokwe
Chavanga
Peter Grant(would like to see him at 12 or 13)
Naas
even Barry if we really want to.
21 Nov 2006, 12:44 pm
skim now you just need a decent pack so you can hold onto the ball at the breakdown etc…
21 Nov 2006, 12:47 pm
What about Seconds?
Zahier? If Lomu goes to the Boland?? Will he wear the stormers jersey?? Hehehe
Think this pack will Rock!
1. JD Moller
2. Schalk Brits
3. Brok Harris
4. Francois VD Merwe
5. Gerrie Britz
6 Luke Watson
7. Justin Melck
8. Robbie Diack
With depth of Skeate, Bekker, Edmonds, Louw…
21 Nov 2006, 12:48 pm
1.Moller
2.Brits
3.Human(Boland)
4.Francois
5.Brits
6.Luke
7.Melk
8.Diack
And Yeah, I figure Seconds is better than the convict from Fiji.
21 Nov 2006, 12:49 pm
That’s a good pack!
Yoda, stormers did not concede much turnovers at ruck time, and we had some of the best turnover statistics!
21 Nov 2006, 12:49 pm
what about Joe van Niekerk?
21 Nov 2006, 12:50 pm
Lomu won’t make the Stormers.
He’d be too afraid of Paulse anyway.
21 Nov 2006, 12:51 pm
Joe needs a few klappe and a good haircut.
If he can get his act together I’d play him instead of Diack.
21 Nov 2006, 12:51 pm
Ja these players gets me excited about rugby again, not these plonkers up North…excuse the pun!!
21 Nov 2006, 12:52 pm
and of course Schalk? if he makes a comeback
21 Nov 2006, 12:54 pm
Robbie Diack will perform when he is on a hot spot to retain his place from Joe, so allout from this kid!!
Same with Naas and Brent, Same with Jean and Barry, same with Aplon and Jantjes, same with Skeate VD Merwe, same with Paulse and Seconds/Zahier/Joe P… Man cant wait to see it!!!
21 Nov 2006, 12:56 pm
oh, and Conrad Jantjes
21 Nov 2006, 12:56 pm
I forgot about Jantjies…..
I wonder if he’ll make it?
Better than Seconds?
21 Nov 2006, 12:58 pm
AND Ronnie Cooke, well, for the Stormers at least.
21 Nov 2006, 12:58 pm
skim, thay didnt excactly dominate either…
and sorry that isnt a good pack. will be dominated by the cheetahs, bulls, sharks, and probably lions as well…
province should be trying to take tips from rassie. he has a big tight five, fast backrow, and that makes it easy for their backs to run with the ball. imagine a wp backline behind that pack.
problem is provionce are to busy buying backline players. should be concentrating more on the pack. you have enough guys at the back…
21 Nov 2006, 13:01 pm
I’m happy with Skim and Provvas’s pack, there is also Tiaan Liebenberg.
21 Nov 2006, 13:01 pm
I agree we have a problem at loosehead, Don’t know if Moller will make it.
The rest is fine though.
Gee Molly, Is ronnie Cooke gonna play with the Stormers?
I thought he was a cheetah?
If he is he can play wing.
21 Nov 2006, 13:02 pm
Shimange moves down the bench…..
I rate Huia Edmonds higher than him.
Edmonds didn’t have a bad CC?
21 Nov 2006, 13:02 pm
Stormers squad: (Not confirmed)
15. Aplon, Jantjes
14. Paulse, Seconds, Zahier
13. Uys, Greeff, Barry
12. Jean, Sarel, Grant
11. Sireli, Nokwe, Benjamin,
10. Brent, Naas, Dollie?
9. Bolla, Delport
8. Robbie, Joe,
7. Melck, Brits
6. Luke Watson, Schalk?
5. Bekker, ??
4. VD Merwe, Skeate,
3. Brok, Fourie, Human
2. Schalk,
1. JD Moller, ??
Look a great squad… I’ll even say at least 15 players can make the bok squad…
21 Nov 2006, 13:03 pm
I was also hoping Cobus Visagie would make it…..
Imagine
1.Andries
2.Brits
3.Cobus
21 Nov 2006, 13:04 pm
Oh yeah, Greef!
He played a mean game at 13 against the griquas..
21 Nov 2006, 13:06 pm
Ja Tiaan! and Cooke.
Yoda, this squad kicked all those teams arses in forward play in round robin stages, only the Cheetahs are maybe better, and the bulls. We did beat them twice, before Heyneke “took over”, they got some boks back etc, so we will be competitive!!
Expect some surprises!!
21 Nov 2006, 13:06 pm
Anyway, I have to go now….
See you guys later!
Cheers cheers.
21 Nov 2006, 13:08 pm
WHOOOOO!!!! I can’t wait for the mag too come out!
21 Nov 2006, 13:08 pm
How can Rassie be coach of the year?
Pote Human, in his first year as coach, took the BB to the CC final for a share of the trophy, despite starting the season with 27 players unavailable.
Rassie could not beat a severely weakened BB side at the Cheetahs home ground.
Doesn’t make sense.
21 Nov 2006, 13:08 pm
I’ve heard Wp bought some young locks and a prop from the Bulls? Anyone know?
21 Nov 2006, 13:11 pm
Blueblood,
You dont remember Meyer kneeing in the middle of the circle shouting the shots??….With Pote lookin on nodding his head???? You’d better pray Meyer stays at the bulls and dont coach the boks, or your team will end up where they were in the first half of the CC…
21 Nov 2006, 13:13 pm
blueblood
rassie did it last year and even got a win and he didn’t get coach of the year. so why the tears? take it as it is!
cant wait for the mag!
21 Nov 2006, 13:15 pm
Blueblood
I have asked this from many Blue Bulls, no-one answered me yet…
Name these alleged 27 unavailable players. I am dying to know who they are…
21 Nov 2006, 13:15 pm
provvas
you will be playing against those boks champ. it doesnt help your pack performes ok in a second rate CC missing loads of boks. i remember the sharks also pushing them around. you have to measure yourself vs the best, and when the boks came back, that pack was no where…
21 Nov 2006, 13:17 pm
Ronnie was with the Griquas in the CC, but then he got injured again, I guess we’ll have to see where he goes.
21 Nov 2006, 13:18 pm
Yoda
Wise you are not…
Out you must go…
21 Nov 2006, 13:19 pm
Ronny signed with Western Province, a long time ago…
21 Nov 2006, 13:21 pm
the saint, did he sign with Province? I thought he was just going to be available to the stormers.
21 Nov 2006, 13:23 pm
oh, and we’re forgetting Gus “the gas man” Theron!
21 Nov 2006, 13:27 pm
Molly
Gus is not a serious contender anymore, far from it…
21 Nov 2006, 13:27 pm
saint
i dont know about 27, but here is a few who didnt play in the final;
guthro, bands, victor, bakkies, , fondse, cronje, p3, dlulane, f du preez, WO, welsh, habana
(10 boks out of 12 guys)
during the CC guys like gary botha, spies, WO, danie rousouw, roets, ndugane that i can think of also didnt play until close to the end of the round robin stages.
so whether there were 27 players missing i dont know, and i might still be missing a few, but if you think the bulls were even close to full strenth in the CC you are kidding yourself…
ah well, im not moaning, it gave alot of the youger guys like adams, kuun, lobberts, fondse, v schouw, basson, delport etc. great exposure, and helped them learn how to play with their team mates in years to come. these guys are after all the guys who will be carrying the flag in the future, so it was a good thing IMO…
21 Nov 2006, 13:28 pm
Hey, Gus is a hero, we have to stop him from following Jorrie overseas, that would be tragic!
21 Nov 2006, 13:33 pm
saint my friend, and you are wise??? surely you can see that that pack is not near the best pack in the country???
im not picking a fight, so please open your eyes and look at that pack from a neutral perspective…
im not trying to break you guys down, im just saying that is not a good pack IMO. its ok, but nothing special, and probably the 4th or 5 best pack out of the 5 teams that will be playing in the S14. but there are lost of young guys, so it will get better with time im sure, most tight forwards will get better with time.
21 Nov 2006, 13:37 pm
saint
It was definately 27 – i remeber reading it a few times on news.24 etc. It included the 0/21 players at the wcup – about 11 or 12 of them
21 Nov 2006, 13:38 pm
Jake White is injecting mandrax into his eyes if you ask me!
21 Nov 2006, 13:50 pm
Saint

Fuzzybear needs another fur rub.
21 Nov 2006, 14:12 pm
These cover guys look like they wearing more make up than I wear in a week.
21 Nov 2006, 14:13 pm
Guthro plays for the cheetah’s doesn’t he?
21 Nov 2006, 14:15 pm
Molly
He has been at the bulls for two years now – just injured
21 Nov 2006, 14:21 pm
Ja wat guys , province will standup again. Just wait and see , tired of waiting but we won the cricket this year.
21 Nov 2006, 14:31 pm
Jaque Fourie was way the best player this year, AJ Venter not far behind. As for you wallies above, i pray Marius Joubert comesback to his old form next year. Then we will have 2 centre combos again:-
JDV/Fourie
Wynand/Marius Joubert
Jaco Pretoors can naff off back to sevens
21 Nov 2006, 14:43 pm
To the bulls,
Wp also missed lots of players:
Joubert, Barry for a time, Eddie, Jean, Greeff, Peter grant, Schalk Britz, Big Joe, also must be missing some. What form they are on is questionable, but so is the form of a habana, Roux, Bothas at those times….. You must remember that half the Wp team ‘s stars havnt played S14, It will be their first, and this is great to know, PLayers like Danie, Spies, Wo, Akona, gary etc returned for bulls, where Wp got no one back, in fact Barry was taken away….
So I will not be too worried about competing against “the best” next year…..like I said……You might be surprised….
21 Nov 2006, 14:46 pm
Wp is k@k provvas!
21 Nov 2006, 15:00 pm
Supa,
Bulls gaan K@K!!!
Moet erken…hoop net Heyneke word bok afrigter, dan val die bulls karte huise heeltemal inmekaar…Hy is nou al soveelkeer weg as coach, net om in te gryop sodra die bulle amper teen die valke of iemand verloor…. Sonder meyer is bulle ‘n eier
21 Nov 2006, 15:06 pm
I’m looking forward to the Lions playing, they were looking so good in the CC!
21 Nov 2006, 15:07 pm
Dawn, is nie makeup nie! Airbrush of photoshop
21 Nov 2006, 15:16 pm
ag provvas worry jy eerder dat jou span nie in 2008 moet plek maak vi die spears nie…
21 Nov 2006, 15:19 pm
leeanthonyw,
And the next thing you’ll say is that Barry should come back. What about Danie Gerber maybe…
21 Nov 2006, 15:43 pm
21 Nov 2006, 15:46 pm
is it a coincidence that all the sa rugby mag players of the year just happen to be in sa available for a photo shoot?
21 Nov 2006, 15:48 pm
87- dam i forgot bout spies, scrap that thought
21 Nov 2006, 15:52 pm
Well done to Jacques, i think het had this coming.
One question though, how come you guys vote vote for him, the rest chose FdP and SASI made Os the sportman of the year…
21 Nov 2006, 15:58 pm
Kerneels – we just felt out of all Saffa players he was the best and most consistent performer in two pretty shoddy teams – the Cats and Boks.
FDP – is solid but never flash and Os is a legend always, but Jauque deserved the recognition for a dam fine season in trying times.
21 Nov 2006, 16:03 pm
I cant understand why Barry did not get nominated for player of the year. He has everything that a legend is made of, speed , vision and can side step,,it just doesnt make sense
21 Nov 2006, 16:04 pm
Danwel Dema, Kennedy Tsimba, Wium Arlow.
And Johan Wasserman’s father passed away, so he was unavailable for a short while.
I would have posted the link a long time ago but Ig would just have removed it.
21 Nov 2006, 16:05 pm
As I said Ig, I agree with you guys. Just gave me the impression that no-one was actually good enough to be named this year…
21 Nov 2006, 17:36 pm
The bulls ruined Tsimba.
21 Nov 2006, 17:52 pm
Winna Winna!
21 Nov 2006, 18:13 pm
WINNA! WINNA!!!
21 Nov 2006, 20:14 pm
87 – LMAO – great observation, yes!
21 Nov 2006, 20:35 pm
Hehehe Kir – this was done way before the Boks went on tour.
21 Nov 2006, 21:45 pm
I might confuse the SARUGBY mag with my TV plus.
21 Nov 2006, 21:45 pm
100% Winna Winaa!
21 Nov 2006, 21:51 pm
jaques fourie looks quite dashing. who woulda though?
21 Nov 2006, 22:06 pm
How you doin?
22 Nov 2006, 06:29 am
yes i agree! Jacques was the most consistent (atleast for the springboks) on delivering solid performances! maybe not man of the match material each time, but always better than par. which no other springbok could do.
22 Nov 2006, 10:25 am
Jaques Cronje?
22 Nov 2006, 11:28 am
Keo,
I dont want to promote another mag on your website – but Rugbyworld SA – is streets ahead of this mag. It rocks.
Viva Phillip Burger article. Cant wait to see what my hero has to say
22 Nov 2006, 22:05 pm
