Fantastic Fourie is No 1

Fantastic Fourie is No 1

Jaque Fourie is SA Rugby magazine’s Player of the Year.

sar_119.jpgFourie may have bizarrely missed out on a nomination for Saru’s equivalent award, but he got our vote simply because he excelled for struggling sides throughout the 2006 season.

He was played out of position on the wing during the Vodacom Super 14, and scored a hat-trick against the Blues after returning to the midfield late in the competition.

Fourie picked up a knee injury at the start of the Test season, but stormed back to score three tries in the Vodacom Tri-Nations. Unfortunately, his season ended when he broke a hand just days before the end-of-year tour — a massive blow to the Bok backline.

Other award winners in this collectors’ edition include:

– Luke Watson (Comeback of the Year)
– Pierre Spies (Rookie of the Year)
– Rassie Erasmus (Coach of the Year)

Also in the magazine, on sale Wednesday:

– Gary Botha, Ollie le Roux and Jonathan Kaplan on the Absa Currie Cup final.
– Kabamba Floors: Why my height shouldn’t matter.
– How Heyneke Meyer built the Bulls empire.
– Hilton Lobberts on his breakthrough season.
– Bevin Fortuin on being a Bok.
– Tiaan Strauss is back in South Africa.
– Nick Mallett and Naas Botha look ahead to the Vodacom Super 14.
– Keo on why SA’s high-performance academy only creates the illusion of transformation.
– Who knows Phillip Burger better, his dad Thys or Cheetahs centre Hendrik Meyer?
– World Cup countdown.

I wouldn’t day he’s the best player this year, because he hasn’t done that much.

    BUT

Think the only reason he’s been chosen is because the others were so k@k.

But he’s a very good player in a kak team.

    Joe Petersen
    Rayno Benjamin
    Jongi Nokwe
    Chavanga
Peter Grant(would like to see him at 12 or 13)

    1. JD Moller
    2. Schalk Brits
    3. Brok Harris
    4. Francois VD Merwe
    5. Gerrie Britz
    6 Luke Watson
    7. Justin Melck
    8. Robbie Diack

With depth of Skeate, Bekker, Edmonds, Louw…

    Better than Seconds?

  • 44.molly: Reply to this comment

AND Ronnie Cooke, well, for the Stormers at least.

  • 45.yoda: Reply to this comment

skim, thay didnt excactly dominate either…

and sorry that isnt a good pack. will be dominated by the cheetahs, bulls, sharks, and probably lions as well…

province should be trying to take tips from rassie. he has a big tight five, fast backrow, and that makes it easy for their backs to run with the ball. imagine a wp backline behind that pack.

problem is provionce are to busy buying backline players. should be concentrating more on the pack. you have enough guys at the back…

  • 46.molly: Reply to this comment

I’m happy with Skim and Provvas’s pack, there is also Tiaan Liebenberg.

  • 47.Skim: Reply to this comment

Yoda, this squad kicked all those teams arses in forward play in round robin stages, only the Cheetahs are maybe better, and the bulls. We did beat them twice, before Heyneke “took over”, they got some boks back etc, so we will be competitive!!
    Expect some surprises!!

How can Rassie be coach of the year?

Pote Human, in his first year as coach, took the BB to the CC final for a share of the trophy, despite starting the season with 27 players unavailable.

Rassie could not beat a severely weakened BB side at the Cheetahs home ground.

    Doesn’t make sense.

    Blueblood,
You dont remember Meyer kneeing in the middle of the circle shouting the shots??….With Pote lookin on nodding his head???? You’d better pray Meyer stays at the bulls and dont coach the boks, or your team will end up where they were in the first half of the CC…

you will be playing against those boks champ. it doesnt help your pack performes ok in a second rate CC missing loads of boks. i remember the sharks also pushing them around. you have to measure yourself vs the best, and when the boks came back, that pack was no where…

    i dont know about 27, but here is a few who didnt play in the final;

guthro, bands, victor, bakkies, , fondse, cronje, p3, dlulane, f du preez, WO, welsh, habana

(10 boks out of 12 guys)

during the CC guys like gary botha, spies, WO, danie rousouw, roets, ndugane that i can think of also didnt play until close to the end of the round robin stages.

so whether there were 27 players missing i dont know, and i might still be missing a few, but if you think the bulls were even close to full strenth in the CC you are kidding yourself…

ah well, im not moaning, it gave alot of the youger guys like adams, kuun, lobberts, fondse, v schouw, basson, delport etc. great exposure, and helped them learn how to play with their team mates in years to come. these guys are after all the guys who will be carrying the flag in the future, so it was a good thing IMO…

  • 68.molly: Reply to this comment

Hey, Gus is a hero, we have to stop him from following Jorrie overseas, that would be tragic!

  • 69.yoda: Reply to this comment

saint my friend, and you are wise??? surely you can see that that pack is not near the best pack in the country???

im not picking a fight, so please open your eyes and look at that pack from a neutral perspective…

im not trying to break you guys down, im just saying that is not a good pack IMO. its ok, but nothing special, and probably the 4th or 5 best pack out of the 5 teams that will be playing in the S14. but there are lost of young guys, so it will get better with time im sure, most tight forwards will get better with time.

Jaque Fourie was way the best player this year, AJ Venter not far behind. As for you wallies above, i pray Marius Joubert comesback to his old form next year. Then we will have 2 centre combos again:-
    JDV/Fourie
    Wynand/Marius Joubert

Jaco Pretoors can naff off back to sevens

  • 79.Provvas: Reply to this comment

    To the bulls,

Wp also missed lots of players:
Joubert, Barry for a time, Eddie, Jean, Greeff, Peter grant, Schalk Britz, Big Joe, also must be missing some. What form they are on is questionable, but so is the form of a habana, Roux, Bothas at those times….. You must remember that half the Wp team ‘s stars havnt played S14, It will be their first, and this is great to know, PLayers like Danie, Spies, Wo, Akona, gary etc returned for bulls, where Wp got no one back, in fact Barry was taken away….

So I will not be too worried about competing against “the best” next year…..like I said……You might be surprised….

Stem wel saam die WP/Stormers koop te veel agter spelers. Die tyd het gekom vir hulle om te bele in n paar groot voorspelers…sies ek klink soos Jake…’Ervare’,is miskien die regte woord.
