Bob’s unfinished business

Bob’s unfinished business

Is Bob Skinstad too old, too fat or simply too good?

sar_post.jpgIn his most revealing interview since coming home, Skinstad tells SA Rugby magazine why he wants to make another contribution to the game.

“When I announced I was returning to rugby I read that I was too old, that I had a beer boep, that I was too fat and that the game had passed me by,” he says. “The only way to counter those reports was to start at the back and work my way up again.”

Skinstad, who picked up 8kg of muscle in two months, believes his experience gives him an edge over the younger generation.

“I knew I would be up against guys who were physically stronger and faster, but I also knew they were mentally younger. The gym can’t give you life experience and the quickest 40m time doesn’t give you wisdom.”

Skinstad also reveals what was said during chats with Dick Muir and Jake White last year, how living in London changed him and why his wife and five-month-old daughter have given his life balance.

Geez, but there are some really DUMB people on this site.

The guy hasn’t even started for the Sharks in the Super 14 and he is the most talked about player! The crowd went wild when he ran for his ten minutes, and here he is gracing the cover of SA Rugby. Guarantee sales will go up.

He is a legend, even if you are a one-eyed supporter and will always have hordes of fans. He is a good buy for a franchise always leaps and bounds ahead when it comes to marketing even if he doesn’t take to the field.

ever wondered why ryk neethling is so much more famous than Roland schoeman even although Roland hands him his *** every time they compete…

  • 108.BlueBlood: Reply to this comment

kevin, I am not talking about him, I am telling the world what a piece of sh*t he is.

  • 109.Fern: Reply to this comment

he is not a legend by any stretch of the imagination.

  • 110.BadBoy: Reply to this comment

Staal, Fern, etc is it true that the devide between North and South is so far apart that you guys can not see how great Bobby Skinstad was? And that he was born to lead the Springboks? And that Corne only got the job because Bob fell vitim to a motor car accident?

Or does the brandy blur your vision to the point that the only aspect of a loose forward you are cabable of noticing is how hard he hits his opposition?

  • 111.Staal: Reply to this comment

    110 bboy,

i take notice of your opinion and even you have the right to say something. I will also defend your right to an opinion – but it is not to say that i have to second your opinion.!!

stop insulting me when i differ from you please.

What the hell has North & South got to do with this?

You probably said the same **** when the sharks bought Percy and made the wheelchair jokes about Ackerman.

Only real has-been playing super 14 this year is Bostik leonard at the bulls – now that is a **** buy. i’m just waiting for the plonker to dye his hair black again, he might then be a little more marketable!

bobby was an average international player and a good provincial player, I will give him that.

But all this hoohah about him is pathetic. All the female rugby supporters think he is a rugby god who can do no wrong. These self same people fall into the Os Snyman category. We were watching rugby once and I asked a lady what team she supports. She asked me if bobby was playing and he was, so I said yes, and she asked who he is playing for and I said WP and she said “oh,then thats who I support”.

Pierre Spies is ten times better than bobby was.

  • 114.BadBoy: Reply to this comment

Even though he has been out the game for some time, I will still pick the legend Bobby Skinstad ahead of:

    Donkey Rossouw
    Pedrie Wanneberg
    AJ Venter
    Pierre Spies
    Anton Leonard
    Jaques Cronje

  • 115.BlueBlood: Reply to this comment

Ag please, Pierre Spies ? Then why isin’t your almighty bobby playing for the Bokke? Why isin’t your ***** ****** super bobby star playing in the green and gold?

  • 116.BadBoy: Reply to this comment

111 Touchy touchy, did I strike a nerve?

My point is that you guys up north are prejudice to wards the great Bobby Skinstad.

Bobby is a lose forward. LOSE forward. All you guys can think about up north is strenth rather than genius and ball skills.

  • 117.Staal: Reply to this comment

    115 bblood,

    now you’re loosing it!!

  • 118.BadBoy: Reply to this comment

115 The master Jake White has not announced his squad yet.

You all know that if ever there was a couch to select Bobby for the Boks it is Jake.

117 Thank you Staal for keeping your aggresive friend Bluebeard onder control…I never thought Afrikaans people used the Lord’s name in vain.

Bob will go to the WC. South Africa will beat New Zealand in the final. If ever there was a team that chokes in Rugby WCs its the All Blacks. Our forwards will jsut about outmuscle all the other packs, regardless of who our loosies are. No one will match our pack. We just need a solid flyhalf. This must be Steyn and he must be backed up by Butch. We need Percy as the kicker.Fourie Du Preez must be backed up by Ruan Pienaar.Centres are our main problem. At this stage I would take De Wet Barry as inside with Bradley Barrit as backup. Outside must be Jacques Fourie and Jean DV. Wings will be Paulse, Habana, Ndungane and Jaco Pretorius.

  • 122.molly: Reply to this comment

Pommie, where is the transformation in that team? Unfortunately thats something we need to think about.

  • 123.Staal: Reply to this comment

    pommie why Paulse???

  • 124.pommie: Reply to this comment

Ill add JP Pietersen as cover for Monty. Now weve got three potential starting players of colour. It is quite scary to think who will be left out at the expense of transformation.Ruan might get unlucky with Januarie coming in. Among the forwards weve got big problems because on merit only Kabamba gets picked at this stage.

115 – Shame, poor old Blueblood is getting upset at the thought of Bob going to the WC07, and his beloved little Spiesie staying at home.

Spies is every bit as good as Bob was in his heyday. AT NIGHT WHEN HE IS DREAMING!

Most of you guys on this site are fucked up – Pick my team! No, pick my team! No pick my player cause yours is kak! Bloody stupid.

A player could have had the best 20 games in a row ever, then you’d still get a Blue Bull saying that their 40 year old charity case player is better.

    Get a life please.

ps. Congrats to the Bulls and Sharks players – Outstanding wins over the weekend.

John Smit looked better. Murray played well. Fourie best in the world. Habana playing rugby again. Uys a lone ranger for the Stormers.

123 Hes got loads of experience and an educated boot. Phillip Burger actually merits selection above him, but gavament wont allow our best team to go, you and I and the rest of the Rugby loving community out there know it.

  • 127.Staal: Reply to this comment

    125 ruff,

where does this Uys come from? He can play a bit!

Stormers loosies were also very good but without support from the t-5.

  • 128.Staal: Reply to this comment

    126 pomkie,

okay now i understand the selection.

Uys is from Bredasdorp, played at Maties. Actually played flyhalf for Boland Craven Week if Im not mistaken.

I like the way Bluebeard went straight to his basket as soon as his master ordered him to.

Staal, will he come out again to find a bone or is he waiting for your command?

The next thing you twats are going to say is that the moon is made of cheese. There is no doubt thta mr. Skinstad was, and I guess could still be, one of the most talented players to run onto a rugby field. Class I think not. It takes more than a couple of good games to be rated as class. Bob wasted a whole career because he had no class, he thought he was bigger than the game and what happened, the game spat him out. Taking him to the world cup can work and he has got a couple of months to prove he can still play at this level but going down memory lane when every thing was being built around Bobby he was pathetic. When it counted the most we had a split Bok team with Booby stuck in the middle(lets not forget the week before the Stomer played a home semi)hope he has grown up like every one claims.

  • 140.leeanthonyw: Reply to this comment

I am so glad Skinstad is back. Watching him comentate on sky sports was so frustrating coz he looked like he could still play top flight rugby. But i m afraid we do need a charismatic player in the Boks and i don’t know yet who will be sacrificed to allow Bob in the Boks.

Players do not need to be charismatic lee, only fire and brimstone preachers.

Staal is correct, a loosie must be a hard *******.Skinstad has porcelain balls. He cannot handle it. It is all good and well when the game opens up and he shines with the team going forward, this can be done against the minnows. But this years S14 is an indication of what is going to happen at the WC. It is going to be hard.

Did you not learn the lesson the stormpies have been giving us week in and week out, the platform is set upfront and there is no place for powder puff’s.
