Italian hero turns villain

Italy’s matchwinner Mauro Bergamasco has been banned for four weeks following his punch on Wales captain Stephen Jones.

Bergamasco scored the decisive try in a famous 23-20 victory in Rome but was later cited for his swinging arm on Jones. He has has since been suspended by the Six Nations disciplinary committee. He will miss Italy’s final game against Ireland.

Jones, who received stitches from the blow but will miss Wales’s match against England for another reason. He aggravated a wrist injury in last week’s match and a x-ray has confirmed a fracture.

Bergamasco’s omission is considered a severe blow to the Azzuri, who are already without five regulars due to injury. Fullback David Bortolussi, winger Denis Dallan, centres Andrea Masi and Gonzalo Canale, and prop Martin Castrogiovanni are all in doubt to play the Irish at the Stadio Flamino.
