Kiwis claim Sevens crown
3 Jun 2007
New Zealnd claimed the Sevens title in dramatic fashion in Edinburgh.
The clever money was on Fiji, who simply had to finish as semi-finalists in the Cup section, and hope that New Zealand didn’t win the tournament, to retain their crown.
But Wales done New Zealand a huge favour by beating Fiji 21-14 in their quarter-final. The Fijians could therefore achieve a maximum of eight points – which they did by winning the Plate trophy. But New Zealand recorded an emphatic 34-5 victory over Samoa in the final to overhaul the islanders at the top of the series standings.
The Springbok Sevens crashed out of the Cup quarter-final, losing 19-12 to New Zealand, then went down 19-14 to Waisale Serevi’s men in the Plate semi-final.
The other Cup semi-final saw Samoa beat Argentina before being humbled by the Kiwis in the final.

Fiji were unlucky but you dont expect them to be bailed out in 1/4 finals so well doen wales. Tich does amazing things given that 7,s in NZ is right at the bottom of the list in terms of players etc. Just an amazing coach. Well done guys!1

Over the last couple of tournaments the Kiwis have looked good – and well done to them. The Boks have looked second rate, and to be honest I think Bobo must go back to Vodacom cup rugby -that seems to be his level of mental sharpness.
I also think that Treu is on a good learning curve – he needs to be left to develop there for a couple more years. Also, he needs to be given a constant set of players that he can work with, not a bunch of offcuts that get yanked back into the S14/Vodacom Cup squads at will.

Adam Thompson and Afeleke Pelenise looked like two players who we may see a lot more of in the 15 Man code… Thompson as a big and fast loosie and Pelenise on the wing.
Any thoughts from the Kiwi posters?
