Pienaar primed for Newlands start

Ruan Pienaar could make his long-awaited first start for the Springboks this Saturday due to the injury to Ricky Januarie.

Januarie hurt his knee in the Boks’ 35-8 win over Samoa at Ellis Park, and although it is yet to be confirmed he looks set to be sidelined for up to a month.

White has made it known that Januarie is his back up to Bulls No 9 Fourie du Preez, who is still recovering from a shoulder injury picked up in the playoffs of the Super 14. After eight games on the bench, Pienaar is likely to run out for his first start against the Wallabies this weekend at Newlands.

While Pienaar will replace Januarie, it is less certain who will occupy the second halfback spot on the bench. Jano Vermaak and Heinie Adams are in Romania with the Emerging Springboks, but one of them may fly home for the opportunity to make their Bok debut.

A full update on the Bok injuries will be given by White at a Cape Town press conference at 12pm on Monday. Luke Watson, Ashwin Willemse and Wayne Julies are the other players who picked up injuries in Saturday’s victory.

Watson, however, has been sent back to his province as has Johan Ackermann, Bismarck du Plessis, AJ Venter and Wikus van Heerden.
