Watson to miss golden opportunity
25 Jun 2007
Luke Watson is still struggling with a rib injury and is likely to miss the away leg of the Tri-Nations.
Watson won his first Test cap against Samoa and was handed another opportunity when Jake White named his squad for the trip Down Under. The dynamic opensider featured in WP’s 18-13 win over the Lions last Saturday but finished the match with a grimace, and confirmed in a post-match interview that it was the same injury incurred in the Samoa match.
Watson and coach Kobus van der Merwe allayed concerns at the subsequent press conference, but recent reports from the WP camp indicate Watson will be out of action for two weeks.
Tonderai Chavhanga played his first big game of the year on Saturday and was also on White’s list, but the winger is battling with a groin problem and could also remain at home.
Meanwhile, Lions and Springbok flyhalf Andre Pretorius will see a specialist today to determine whether his buttocks injury will require surgery. John Smit and Butch James (hamstrings), both of whom will not travel to Australasia, are on the mend and should return to training later this week.
