Stormers win Rassie tug-o-war

Stormers win Rassie tug-o-war

Rassie Erasmus will not attend the World Cup due to his commitment to the Stormers.

After a meeting on Monday involving Erasmus’s lawyer, Saru MD Jonathan Stones and manager of national teams Andy Marinos, it was learned he will stay behind to work with the Stormers.

Erasmus was recently appointed Senior Professional Coach at the Cape franchise which sees him coaching the Stormers as well as occupying the Director of Rugby position. After signing a four-year contract he is expected to start preparations for next season from 1 August.

Since coaching the Cheetahs in the Super 14, Erasmus has helped the Boks as a technical adviser to coach Jake White. Having no official contract with SA Rugby he joined the Cape union last Friday.

    thats a joke.
surely they can let him go for a month over the world cup ? if anything it will help his position … will make a heap of contacts etc.
besides …. surely its in the boks interest to have him there.

that said i cant believe SARU never gave him some sort of contract

rugby is, officially, run by palookas

Pity, Rassie has a lot to add. Clearly the Cheetahs benefited greatly from him and would have been nice to have him there at the WC, helping with strategy as we go along.
Rassie, book off sick man and go to France.

Bud,I was working so didn’t have time to answer!

WP is a graveyard of talented players,WP simply have to have the best players on the market and then they ruin their careers.Think about Big Joe,Schalk Brits,Tonderai Chavanga,Marius Joubert,Gerrie Britz,Hanyani Shimange and Brent Russel…..all these players careers have stalled badly at WP\Stormers.
It doesn’t just stop with players,Nick Mallett’s reputation has been damaged by his stint with WP.Kobus van der Merwe was a reputable coach before heading to WP.luckily Gary Gold has escaped being painted with the unsuccessful brush for the moment cos he has been primarily coaching u/21 this season and was assistant coach previously and therefore not in the firing line.

The Stormers constantly ignore national interests in the S12\14 by playing national players out of position (before you get all grumpy,I know other teams do this too).

Basically Cape rugby should be looking internally for their solutions and not externally. They have the rugby player factory known as Stellenbosch university so why the constant need to poach players and coaches from other provinces?

    Good fight,good night!

everybody thinks its rassie!! its the players of the fs thats preforming!!!

FS playing well but in the top structure somthing is not right. they think they are gonna be the best team in the country if they buy just two or 3 grey boys its a team game!!!

They need to keep the whole FS cravenweek team there!!

  • 15.runningriot: Reply to this comment

is the country’s rugby gonna turn black after the RWC? what about contracts? Anyway it wont last long!! they will see that they cant cope and blame it on apartheid!!!!

Defintiely something else going on here.

That media report from SARU stinks to high heaven with the things they didnt say.

The report runs along the lines of ‘they sat down with Rassie for a meeting today and concluded he would not be goign to the WC’.

Think there’s been a big falling out here. My guess is with his royal whiteness.

  • 20.Vinnie: Reply to this comment

Its no coincidence that Jake annoucnes Eddie Jones is consulting and he hopes to get SCW onboard and then a few hours later Rassie is suddenly out of the picture.

    Think a bit further Supa…

Vinnie has a point there, rassie out to be replaced by Eddie Jones, Jakes old mate.
But you guys are slow this evening, nobody has blamed Luke Watson yet……

    # 20 Vinnie – don’t often go lol – far too serious about my game – but ” his royal whiteness” had me in stitches! Even over here in Pomerania that is funny!

  • 25.kaksioek: Reply to this comment

Grow up girls. Eddie Jones will be with the Boks for one week — that has nothing to do with Rassie not going to the World Cup. More likely, WP wouldn’t release him.

  • 26.ens: Reply to this comment

Lets hope Eddie can get our backline firing and Rassie can get the stormers firing we need to tap that large talent pool.

If Rassie can perform with a wider selection of talent then he will prove his worth for a future SA coach. He has to build depth out of the large local pool and managing an extended squad well. I would say a S14 final is now the bar.

I think its the logical tri win decision here Boks win WP wins and SA rugger wins!

  • 27.wp_boytjie: Reply to this comment

#5: Selfish? Dont come with that bullshit I can also make other provinces look guilty. Heyneke played Fourie Du Preez with a injury in the super 14 final.

That meant Fourie Du Preez was F***ked for the Boks for any game before the world cup….but why he was played in the Super 14 Final is totally understandable. WP need a miracle and thats very clear , so maybe that is why Rassie is gonna be starting now allready. Rassie is a great coach and I think a genius, BUT …. his tactics has not worked in the Super 14 and free state were the only SA team that could not win one game away from home ….. that could have eventually counted against him

  • 28.Twig: Reply to this comment

Erm, nowhere in this article does it mention any WP/Stormers interference. The meeting on Monday was between Rassie and SARU, effectively.

I know how we all love to slate WP because they’re the most successful Currie Cup side in history, but perhaps it’d be a good idea to read the facts before setting off on another misplaced tirade.

  • 29.munkiboi: Reply to this comment

cant blame Rassie or WP coz SARU would not formalise his involvement with a short contract.

But what a short sighted approach this is. A trip to the world cup would have been invaluable experience for Rassie seeing as he is destined to coach the boks in the future.

all you conspiracy theorists are a joke. the problem is you guys speculate and repeat opinions unti they become fact in your own little heads. crazy.

  • 30.SjamBok: Reply to this comment

Jeez the Stormers management (admin) really have no clue about nurturing at all. The quicker the go the better for WP.

Instead of allowing the guy two months to be part of the (winning) world cup squad, and pick up massive experience from Jake on how to run a tour, they insist in him staying and supervising pre-season conditioning (which any old donkey can do). These guys have the vision of a mole in a sandstorm.

  • 31.big dawg: Reply to this comment

I don’t think that it has anything to do with Saru\Jake White as suggested by Vinnie…..get a job at keo.co.za mate cos you’re sensationalism skills are right up there with the best of them!

Bottom line,Rassie made a committment to WP and they have every right to ensure he prepares the Stormers for the Super 14.One would have hoped that they might have allowed him 2 months with the Boks with national interest at heart, not to mention the learning curve as Sjambok pointed out.
Instead they are being selfish and taking a hard line approach to benefit themselves.

I wouldn’t bet against JW phoning Rassie a few times during the RWC though.

By the way,Eddie Jones is with the Boks on a CONSULTANCY basis and is not replacing anyone as suggested – read the article china!

This is the same Rassie who couldn’t manage to coach the joint Currie Cup champion Cheetahs to anything better than 4th out of the 5 South African super-rugby franchises, right?

So, what’s the fuss about, then?

Don’t blame the Stormers, the final call probably lies with Rassie.

Rassie is overrated, he did not really perform at the Cheetahs, cashed in and left for the highest bidder.

    Jy klink soos n suurgat.

It was Rassie who wanted his contract with WP to start on 1 August.

What should WP have done? Refused and said he must rather stay with the Boks (who he doesnt have a cotract with) while their team is struggling?

    Talk about a stupid comment.

And and before i forget, Paul Delport is gonna be a LEGEND!!!

    This is an interesting development……….

Firstly, SA Rugby needed Rassie to be in France as he in all probability would be the coach at the next World Cup. So it would have been a great experience for him and good investment for SA Rugby.
Secondly, this issue about a contract with SA Rugby is balderdash…didn’t Rassie volunteer to coach FS free of charge in his first year? That doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t be paid by SA Rugby which he is. So what’s the big deal. From his perspective, he’s enhancing his chances of being JW’s successor by being with the team and excelling as technical coach exactly as JW did in the 95 RWC. Short sigted Rassie.
Thirdly, Rassie leaves FS Rugby to take up the position at SA Rugby then dumps SA Rugby within 2 months for WP…Perhaps his real reason was to leave FS Rugby and he used SA Rugby as the escape.
In short, Rassie’s made a bad (in my view) career limiting move.
    Nonetheless good luck Rassie.

  • 47.the dood: Reply to this comment

Couldn’t agree with you more darrons1……Cape Town is an awesome place to live but WP rugby is riddled with problems and they keep blaming everyone else!
With the team they have had on their books they should have been top half of the Super 14 for the last few years as well as being a force in the Currie Cup……..WP rugby is a graveyard of talent!

  • 48.Test: Reply to this comment

If you guys read the Planetrugby article it seems that both Smit and Jake begged Rassie to stay and that Jake was hoping for a “Winwin” situation whereby Rassie would still be able to travel with the team. John said it would definitely have a negative effect on them if he wasnt at the WC.

I think Rassie has been a bit short sighted on this one. The experience he would have got from being at the world cup would have gone a long way in furthering his career as others have mentioned.
