Griquas batter Boland

Griquas fended off a strong challenge from the Boland Kavaliers to triumph 43-32 in Kimberley.

In a game marred by handling errors, it was the hosts who managed to take more of the numerous chances created, outscoring Boland by six tries to four.

Despite Griquas scrumhalf Tertius Carse’s eighth minute opener, it was the Wellington based union who started more brightly, replying with five pointers from wing John Daniels and fullback Renfred Dazel, both displaying great finishing instinct.

Griquas No 8 Heinrich Stride however got his side back into the match, breaking off a ruck on the Kavaliers 22m line to race over for the try.

The hosts dominated possession and territory and gradually built the pressure on Boland. Griquas fullback Hans van Dyk eventually cracked the defensive line before Lafras Uys scored the bonus-point try after the half-time siren to give his side a 26-20 lead at the break.

Griquas continued their dominance in the second-half, scoring early through Stride before Boland lock Dries van Schalkwyk dragged his side back into the contest.

Flanker Wayne van Heerden however eliminated any fears of a comeback, making Conrad Burke’s late try nothing more than a consilation.

Griquas - Tries: Carse, Stride (2), Van Dyk, Uys, Van Heerden. Conversions: Barnard (5). Penalty: Barnard

Boland - Tries: Daniels, Dazel, Van Schalkwyk, Burke. Conversions: Dollie (3). Penalties: Dollie 2

As an afterthought – how can any union such as the Falke be in the top echelon of SA rugby with a team of hugely overweight slobs and yet Griquas and even un(der)financed Boland can filed a team with obvious personal discipline and dedication?

Never have I seen such an unfit and grossly overweight disgrace of a team as the Valke in professional rugby!

    agree with you cyberscamp(2).
plaatjies, smith and co(from the valke) might be fit enough fo 4th league hostel rugby at varsity, but definately not for a premier curriecup competition!!!!!!!
not a big fan of the spears idea, but surely they would have put up a better show than our overweight friends from the eastern gauteng!
i really hope griquas can keep up the pace and maybe reach the play-offs!!!! they look like a well drilled team with little sideshows…

Ya they can actually rather put a spears team in the currie cup , instead of the valke. Let the Spears prove themselves there and develop and maybe in 5/6years they could be considerd good enough for super 14. ….

There are a lot of EP / Border / SWD guys in the Griquas side. But then again they are playing for all the provinces at the moment.

Franchises should contest the CC and all the provinces should play each other at u-21 level. Take the current 5 franchises and then bring in the Spears and a Pumas / Leopards / Valke franchise.
