Roses United’s update

Roses United’s hopes of defending their Boland Premier League title suffered a setback at the start of the season when they lost 12 players to other clubs that can offer the players match fees.

Roses, who are sponsored by SA Rugby magazine, brought development players into their 1st XV who are extremely talented but lacked experience. As a result, the club often let things slip during the second half and lost their first six matches. However, they soon found their feet, claiming consecutive wins over Wellington and then beating top-of-the-log Rawsonville.

‘We turned our season around as soon as the team began to gel,’ says head coach Francois Davids. ‘We increased the stamina of our young backline by spending time in the gym provided by Saru. We have also been assisted by Evox, which has supplied the players with performance supplements.’

By the beginning of August, Roses had forced their way up to fourth on the log and were again challenging for the title. Club chairman Anthony Joseph singled out centre Jacquin Jansen and captain–flank Franzell September as players to watch. ‘They have the raw talent needed to help the team succeed. With the training and sponsorship support given to the club, there is hope that these locals will not fall through the system and will play professional rugby.’
