Lions escape mudbath

The Golden Lions claimed a 15-10 win against the Boland Kavaliers in poor Wellington conditions.

Heavy rain had left puddles all over the field, making expansive rugby all but impossible. In the end, the powerful Lions forwards proved the difference between the sides.

The Lions’ first try came courtesy of a puddle. Flyhalf Louis Strydom kicked ahead for winger Rayno Benjamin, the ball stopped dead in the water and Boland fullback Justin Peach overran it. That allowed Benjamin to hack the ball ahead, pick it up and pass inside to Jaco Pretorius, who scored.

Boland responded with a try soon after half-time when Peach scored after the Lions lost control of the ball. That put the home side into the lead for the first time, and they should have gone further ahead when flyhalf Isma-eel Dollie missed an easy penalty.

The Lions made Boland pay when a cross kick from Strydom saw Benjamin claim his side’s second try. Strydom then kicked a late penalty to secure the win.
