Treu covets core group
16 Nov 2007
Paul Treu has contracted 13 players for the upcoming Sevens season with the Blue Bulls’ Neil Powell named as captain.
The first leg of the IRB Sevens series gets underway in Dubai on 29 November. Treu told reporters he contracted a core group as he hopes to build towards the 2009 Sevens World Cup and the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Treu has recalled some experienced heads with Powell having represented the side back in 2002 and Fabien Juries in 2005.
Jonathan Mokuena (Cheetahs) and Marius Schoeman (Bulls) will be available for the first two legs in Dubai and George before they return to their Super 14 franchises. However, Schoeman’s inclusion in the opening tournament is still pending a fitness test.
South Africa Sevens squad: Baldwin McBean, Danwel Demas, Fabien Juries, Frankie Horne, MJ Mentz, Mpho Mbiyozo, Mzwandile Stick, Neil Powell (captain), Norman Nelson, Renfred Dazel, Schalk van der Merwe, Tobela Mdaka, Vuyo Zangqa.

The problem is that when the guys really develop they get grabbed back into the 15 man game

Neil Powell is a poor choice as Captain and player, would rather support Schalk as captain.

Does this mean they will NOT be available to play for ANY other team?
If so then great!! It’s about time they develop a core squad into a world conquering team similar to Jake White!

It is a problem for 7′s, as soon as they do well, they get snapped up by the 15 man game.
The Bok 7′s have also been through so many captaibs, Jaco Pretorius, Jonathan Mokuena, Gcobani Bobo and and and.
Paul Treu has a difficult job, and under the circumstances does very well.
I am a huge 7′s fan, and cant wait for the season
to start.

There is no doubt in my mind that we have the players in SA who are more than capable to win the Seven Series and the Sevens WC!!
All that is needed is for the players to be identified and contracted, and let them play as a squad week in and week out!!
They must pick a captain who can lead them for the next 3/4 years and he must stay with the team, similar to John Smit. I do not believe Neil Powell is the right guy for this job..

Biggest loss from last season’s squad has to be Stefan Basson.
16 Nov 2007, 13:21 pm
Stefan is too busy worrying about his girlfriend to concentrate and be loyal to his rugby

White man can’t play sevens …LOL! I play in the Randburg touch league and one of the top teams is a team of black guys. They physically do not look the part but they know how to give teams carrots!! Even the overweight guys in the team are FAST!

Vuyo Zanqua should be in a S14 squad, saw him really rattle defences in those currie cup friendlys (he is the guy im thinking of right, the winger who jinks and dodges etc etc)

I wish that SARU would get their act together about the 7′s. I for one as a Bok supporter am embarrassed that we have never won the 7′s world series. NZ have won it many times. Fiji too. We have never even won OUR OWN GEORGE SEVENS TITLE. SIES MAN!!
Dammit, let Paul Treu contract the full group for a set period of time, like two years (at good pay, so they dont want to break their contracts when the BB’s offer them a 15′s contract. Then they can get to know each other, and stay in shape, and play as a world beating team. The team we started off with at the Dubai sevens last year was very good! Then they all buggered off, and the discontinuity sunk any hopes of a World series challenge.
The Unions must also stand by this decision. Also, why don’t the big unions have their own 7′s teams, and send them to play in international friendly compos, like Hong Kong sevens, etc? I know that they have local 7′s teams, but this does not seem to be taken seriously. As a spectator sport, 7′s is beautiful!
