Brent burns Bath
27 Jan 2008
Brent Russell was on fire against Bath, but the day was not as hot for Bok flyhalf Butch James.
Russell scored two tries in Saracens’ 26-20 win against Bath in the English premiership to again emphasise his attacking value, but James will in all likelihood miss the next six weeks because of injury.
James, in outstanding form for Bath, hurt his shoulder in scoring a try early on and the Bath management confirmed the seriousness of James’s injury.
Russell, meanwhile, proved brilliant with ball in hand, but not as effective in defence. The Pocket Rocket, starting at fullback for Saracens, scored two tries, but also coughed up one late in the game with ordinary defence. It has been the story of Russell’s season – lethal on attack, charitable on defence.

He scored one good one and the other was straight running. Other than that his defence was shocking on more than two occasions. I see no place for him in the current Bok setup.

Butch must come home to south africa and play for the boks again. With AP out ones again Butch is the only one who can realy stand up at international level. So Pieter Dv if you realy want to bring back a good player get James back in South Africa as soon as possible.

I really dont know what is the best position for Russell …. he is not a flyhalf , not a fullback ……a wing ??????

Stew,
I was always hoping the Bok selectors would play Russell on the wing. (when he was playing really well, but being stuffed around)
he has the pace to beat anyone on the outside with a bit of space.
Also, his fly-half abilities mean that from 3rd phase ball, when the defence is mis-aligned, he could slot into the 10 channel and use his ability to draw/beat close in defenders.

morning all
what a fiasco the roundball was last night!
U12′s would do better! R80 mill for that? ha, someone must be skimming the cream. Old Alberto has just become the biggest fraudster in SA, hell, even the arms scandal doesnt come close.
what a laugh.
lucky i support rugby!

Saracens are giving Russel an extended run at fullback… always his best position… and its paying dividends for them

I went to the game. Brent was excellent on attack but his defence let Sarries down. Olly Barkley’s try was as a result of sloppy defence from Brent.
Hopefully Butch recovers quickly from his dislocated shoulder.

skopskiet – You are making a fool out of yourself buddy.
We almost won back to back tri-nations under White, just loosing at the last in 2005, AP going off caused that loss.
I have never seen any bok coach get the Boks to perform 2 seasons in a row, 2004/5. 2006 was always going to happen, typical Bok hiccup year, and 2007 had to happen becuase of RWC planning.
I find your comments ludicrous and embarrasing

BR could have done more on the Barkley tackle, but was wrong-footed. I was watching his defence quite closely during the game, and he snuffed out quite a few attacks. I also saw him single-handedly put one of the big locks (Grewcock or Borthwick)on his backside in the first 10 minutes, so it’s not all bad.
I don’t think we will see him playing live in this country again. He is being allowed to settle into a position over in the UK, and that must appeal to him.

Maybe embarrassing for you leeanthony, not so for me,
Perhaps facts to you are embarrassing, you guys love to gloss over realities, like 49-0 never happened, and 2006 – 07 we came stone last twice in a row, WC is that your excuse, poor show mate, and you look at facts all askew and pretend to yourselves Jake had such a great record, I’ll tell you again he was a very ordinary, mediocre coach, maybe even weak in some areas, lost more than he won against real opposition, and his bacon was saved many times over including that easy cake walk RWC, so keep pretending if thats what you need to do to hold some false pretenses up, at least I know truth from fiction, even if quite a few of you don’t care to face up to it.
