Canes comeback clouts Chiefs
2 Feb 2008
Tane Tui’polotu scored a try on the hooter to give the Hurricanes a narrow 42-40 win over the Chiefs in Taupo.
The game was played in four 20-minute quarters and after the second stanza, the scores were tied at 14-14. However, the Chiefs pulled away soon after with centre Richard Kahui scoring a hat-trick. At 40-21 they look to have buried the Wellington franchise.
But the Hurricanes answered with four tries, the final score being converted by scrumhalf Piri Weepu to secure victory.
In another Super 14 warm-up played at Olympic Park, the Crusaders downed the Western Force 12-7. The match was dominated by exemplary defence but Robbie Deans’s team had the better of the Aussies in the second half.

This 42-20 type of error would never have happened in Ig’s day.
