Kiwis complete hat-trick
2 Feb 2008
New Zealand won their third consecutive tournament in the 2007/8 Sevens World Series when they snatched a 22-17 win over Samoa in Wellington.
The scores were tied 17-17 going into the last minute when Victor Vito crossed the line. The win stretches the Kiwis’ lead in the Series to 24 points ahead of Fiji and another four ahead of third-placed South Africa.
The Bok Sevens overcame the disappointment of the Cup quarter-final loss to Tonga to emerge winners in the Plate final. South Africa beat Wales 19-12, and a second-half fightback from the Welsh wasn’t enough to deny Paul Treu’s charges who gained eight log points with the victory.
In the other divisions, England beat Argentina 12-7 to win the Bowl, while USA edged Kenya 22-17 to take the shield. The Americans scored all their points in the second half, overcoming a 17-point deficit to run out unlikely winners.

Well, the Tongans ran around to dot down near the uprights and claim 2 points for each conversion.
The South Africans run in a wide try and immediately dot down, throwing away the 2 extra points.
They’ve ALWAYS done that.
Just as what NZ eschew taking dropped goals in tests, the Bok Sevens aren’t interested in converting tries.

Hey, what a beautiful day is it not!
Sitting next to the dam watching the Zebras & Kudus drinking water.
Oh and a Warthog as well and a very aggravated Plover!
Go big today!!! Life is great!

2 Feb 2008, 08:41 am
More almal,
Im going to catch the biggest Nile Perch this side of Lake Albert so better that….would like to use Tackler for bait but that sadly would cause pollution.
2 Feb 2008, 09:30 am
Tickler… they do the same in the 15 man code unfortunately… drives me (and Percy) mal!
2 Feb 2008, 09:47 am
“clearly their work in this facet of play with an ultimate fighting expert is paying dividends”
Which one?
2 Feb 2008, 09:51 am
Ryan, you seriously need to change the title of this thread, it should read: SA CRASH TO TONGA IN QF!!! Who the hell cares about the plate final? Stop celebrating mediocrity, its contagious!
2 Feb 2008, 10:45 am
Victor Vito!!!!

You have hit the nail on the head
Mediocrity rules in SA!!!
2 Feb 2008, 10:51 am
Affred,
I checked Sportinglife and BBC after England’s loss to the Cook Islands and they reported nothing.
Tonga are not a bad sevens outfit

Funny, at least their is excellence in one field, no two I am sure we are still Rugby World Champions
2 Feb 2008, 11:03 am
The mix of top world sevens sides seems to change more than in the 15 a side game. Who knows next year
2 Feb 2008, 11:05 am
NZ aren’t doing badly in the A1GP car racing too. Well ahead of the Yarpies.
2 Feb 2008, 11:06 am
14 JL1,
‘Rugby World Cup Champions’ that is.
I have Supersport here but could not see the sevens. Very frustrating stuff. I have to be sure of a good bar before S14 starts

Oohh sSOo not going out for dinner in this miserable weather !
Good tks my dear … looks & feels like London today … 8 degrees & raining – all day long
Your boys did not do so badly … I notice a distinct abscence of Biggles & Wallable today though
CUP : New Zealand 22 – 17 Samoa

16 TheTackler,
I can get A1 here as it is big in Asia (go figure). All the x-pats say that they don’t like it because the cars are too slow! How the hell can the cars be too slow on a little 3000bht TV, after 12 pints watching from 10 meters past a crowd of off the boat tourists dodging about trying to work out what a bar fine is?
2 Feb 2008, 11:13 am
19 Princess,
Yes …. apparently I am supposed to shoot myself in a dodgy hotel when my money runs out but because I don’t hook up with bar girls I think that my money won’t run out and I will die of old age or drown in a rice field after to much Sang Som.
2 Feb 2008, 11:15 am
JL1,
How is that World Cup Champions thing going for you anyway?
I can’t remember

How is NZ coping with building for the next RWC
I think it was a pss poor decision to give to NZ-IRB will lose lots of money. Predictions are that they are looking at c100 000 unique tourists v the almost 500 000 that went to France
I am not sure they will have space for all those tourist in stadiums and hotels
Anyone got a spare bunkbed?
2 Feb 2008, 11:34 am
25 JL1,
Lots of camping areas
I think that smart WC followers will rent camper vans. NZ is small and hotel accomodation will be tricky. First people to book out all the camper vans will be the smart cookies.
The problem is that everything is sold as packages
2 Feb 2008, 11:39 am
I am thinking of setting up base in OZ and fly for some games into NZ for a week or so
2 Feb 2008, 11:41 am
25 JL1,
I think that due to economics (stadium sizes, travel distance for fans, time zone for viewing on TV) it may be the last time in a long time that NZ get to host it. Given the recent change of focus to big money NH rugby I see it as a very good thing that one of the spiritual homes of rugby get to host the thing themselves before everything goes big money crazy.
After all is the game really about money or the love of the game. New Zealand have provided a lot of tradition and rivalry for rugby (not to mention having the best international record by far since the WC began) and have never sole-hosted the WC!
I see the rugby version of the book “How they stole our game” being written in the near future.
I thoroughly support NZ hosting it now
2 Feb 2008, 11:45 am
Princess,
Are you going to visit Chiang Mai?
2 Feb 2008, 11:49 am
Affred, JL1
The title just got changed. There you go
2 Feb 2008, 11:50 am
27 JL1,
Why set up base in Aus???
2 Feb 2008, 11:51 am
JL1
NZ earned the right to host by starting the comp in the first place, their continued contribution to World Rugby & global support of the game. No one team is known better or more easily recognised than the All Blacks.
That is why –
I might have offered you a spare bunk before you made those snarky comments
2 Feb 2008, 11:53 am
Chch
Yes I will visit Chiang Mai at some point, but for now the closest I will get is a BKK trip planned for mid March.
2 Feb 2008, 11:59 am
33 RP,
Shopping?
I plan to cross into Burma in the next couple of days. I will avoid dressing like a Japanese camera man. Hopefully they don’t pull the internet plug again.
2 Feb 2008, 12:11 pm
No BKK is business, but I will probably manage a little Retail Therapy so the air/hotel costs won’t be wasted
Have fun in Burma, don’t photograph anything you shouldn’t else it mgiht be quite some time before we hear from you again !
2 Feb 2008, 12:23 pm
35 RP,
I no longer have any perspective on money here. I have not rented a motercycle today as I think that 300 for a nice bike is too much when I have being paying 200. My internet and coffee will be more than 100 anyway but I will eat dinner for under 50 and then drink 2 beers for about 90 each
Strange festivals today … one walking past my cafe right now … some people are dressed as yaks … I think that this is somehow the festival of traffic congestion
2 Feb 2008, 12:28 pm
Come on … What are you on ?
2 Feb 2008, 12:36 pm
chch
I got family in OZ so I can sponge on my sister for a week or two and spend more money in NZ
NZ will always lose out on these types of events as it remains a numbers game
Australia did pretty well considering their timezone.
chch,RP are playing Superbru?
2 Feb 2008, 12:37 pm
Plenty of spare bedrooms will come on to the accommodation market in NZ as “homestays” when RWC2011 roll around.
2 Feb 2008, 12:39 pm
RP/CHCH
NZ started a great tournament, I for one thank you for giving us the opportunity to show how good we are and winning it twice. Thank You!
RP
Dinner and dance and the bunkbed can be negotiated
2 Feb 2008, 12:43 pm
Tackler
Are you playing Superbru?
2 Feb 2008, 12:44 pm
37 RP,
I have not touched any poppies, girls or boys …. Thailand may be missing some Sang Som though
Actually I am also keeping the drinking to a minimum. I could have done Parsanage (meditiate and get to know yourself in a temple for a week) but frankly the hours are ****, no internet and you don’t get to look at girls (and I think my head would look funny shaved).
I am not sure I want to get to know myself … I am happier thinking that I am happy
2 Feb 2008, 12:47 pm
38 JL1,
I am playing in the leagues that Superbul set up for 6 nations and Super 14. I am using the same name so as not to confuse people
2 Feb 2008, 13:08 pm
Morning gentlemen…
The AB’s nearly chocked again this morning!! But a win is a win and congratulations guys!!!
2 Feb 2008, 13:12 pm
44 hangbal,
Are you referring to AB de Villiers because the All Blacks don’t play sevens?
2 Feb 2008, 17:07 pm
JL1
An offer can only be negotiated if it is on the table … your insults knocked it off the table & under a chair
Chch
I would have thought contemplating your navel would be right up your alley
2 Feb 2008, 17:22 pm
The bloody chauvinistic Ockers did not even give the results on the news…. apparently Australia did not win…. let alone a little replay. I heard a little on the radio, online, and it sounded sensational. The new Lomu? Maybe this one will be better, not get poisoned, and even score a try against the RSA.
3 Feb 2008, 04:11 am
Chocked? That’s what you do to your car if parked on a hill and you don’t trust the hand-brake.
Or to a vintage aeroplane when you start her up by spinning the prop and you don’t want it to surge forward and decapitate your prop-swinger.
That’s what chocking is.
I’m not joking.
You meant “choking”.

#25.
The Tourists can sleep on the Streets and watch the games from Bars.
This will be a Southern Mans WC. Not some *** Pari, City of Light **** affair.
If you can’t take it don’t come.
If you do come …..bring a good constitution and a sleeping bag. And leave your whining at Customs upon entry.
Who knows, you might actually enjoy it.
3 Feb 2008, 12:57 pm
Chocked.
This is what happens to Big Hit when Mike Catt is in Town.
