Fire away at Vosloo

Fire away at Vosloo

Gerhard Vosloo is just one of the many South African rugby ‘castaways’ thriving abroad. Ask the former Cats flanker your questions and our team will get them answered.

Vosloo left South Africa at the end of 2006 after a disappointing season with the Cats. At 27, he may have thought his rugby career was over, but the past two years have seen a resurgence in Castres colours.

Keo.co.za’s Ryan Vrede is in France and will be interviewing Vosloo on Thursday afternoon. List your questions below and Vrede will have the best one’s answered.

Has the language barrier been an issue to you settling there and if picked would you play for France?

  • 3.allesisblou: Reply to this comment

    Gerhard,

Is it true that you were quite small at school and did not really play rugby? How did you manage to get so big without the help of steriods?

Vosloo was the openside flanker with the funny hair?

If it was you, have you cut your hair and or changed the style?

What is your view on South African Players who are not good enough to make the National team, opt to play overseas and blame Transformation as the reason for their departure.

As opposed to the New Zealanders or Australians whose main objective for playing overseas is better packages and a different perspective and approach to rugby.

Whats life like that side of the world as a South African?

Also how is the language barrier problem ?

What your favourite french wine? Red & white.

  • 10.sparks: Reply to this comment

How come the South African teams grapple with the issue of Transformation?

Your former team (Cats) for this weekend has picked only 2 players of colour and expectedly they have been shoved to the wings.

The country that play in now can field a loose trio of black players at any given moment (Nyanga Besten, Dusatior??),

Is the problem with the coaches or selectors?

Gerhard, when the Lions win their first Super14 title in a few months’ time, do you think you’ll regret having left instead of being part of the solution under Eloff (as many thought you could be)? Might we ever see you return to Jo’burg?

I’ll probably try to get there early so that I can chuck back a few brews and amble down to the stadium in good time. Game starts at 5. How about 3-ish?

Really rated this guy when he was playing in SA. Thought he was a Springbok in the making, so…

Do you still aspire to play for the Boks? Or are you looking at other options i.e. the French national side?

Also, which current SA loose forward do you believe stands out above the rest? And, please, don’t say there are so many – give us a name IYO.

  • 32.Kerneels: Reply to this comment

What do you miss most about SA?

Boerrie rolls? brannas? Joost vetkoek (chicken surprise)?

  • 33.walter: Reply to this comment

Gerhard, your last season with the Lions was great and it looked like you were heading for higher honours…I also hear that you are doing even better in France..any chance that you might return to the Lions at some stage?

  • 34.Storm Voort: Reply to this comment

Gerhard, two questions. How would you compare the standard of rugby in the French /European leagues (in your personal experience) to that on offer here in South Africa (vodacom Cup, Currie Cup and Super rugby)?

    And

How would you say the fans in France measure up to those in South Africa with regards to their knowledge of the game and the way they treat the players / team?

    Gerhard…

You and Jaques Botes were a revelation at flank for the Pumas in 2003 and formed quite a lethal combination. How do you rate Jaques Botes? Let’s say the Sharks approach you, with AJ retiring this year, will you consider playing for them next year?

I felt that you had a competitive edge above many loossies, I liked you fighting attitude, the better coaches started to talk about you and I rated you as part of the top-10 in the country… What was the primary reasons for you to temporary abort the challenge for the Green and Gold? Was it not worth it with all the competition or rather not your top priority at that time? Did you perhaps think by playing abroad it will give your game a new dimension that could later boost your Springbok chances?

If I want the start a SA renegade team… Will you be interested? What must the package look like before we can negotiate?

  • 36.4teen: Reply to this comment

    want “to” start

    1. Do you see yourself returning one day to SA, and why?
    2. Why do you think Sparks insists on being a jerk?

Given your experiences with the cats/lions do you think that its beneficial to merge the cheetahs and lions to form one franchise..given the lack of quality depth and resources within the squad?

  • 45.cab: Reply to this comment

    another very good player.

Q: How are you finding your time in France with the language barrier and all?

  • 46.rednik: Reply to this comment

Why have so many good players left the Lions recently? It would appear that as the team recovers it’s form, a number of good players like you leave. Is it on ly the money, or are their other factors. Obviously life in the Soutyh of France is far superior.

  • 47.racheltjiedebeer: Reply to this comment

Castres are 10th on the Top 14 log after round 8. Is this a fair reflection of your team’s ability?

Don’t you wish you were playing for Toulouse instead?

  • 48.racheltjiedebeer: Reply to this comment

Are you injured? Why did you not play against Bayonne?

I rated him when i saw him play a couple games in 05/06.
Are you angry at the coaches in SA and the SA rugby structures? Is that why you left?

  • 52.Romain: Reply to this comment

Gherard, will you be leaving Castres next year, and if so, where would you go?
