Look cool this summer
18 Feb 2008
Write to SA Rugby magazine and you could win a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses.
We want to know what you think of rugby’s experimental laws. Have they made the game more of a spectacle or has rugby lost its soul? Which laws do you like and which laws should be scrapped at the end of the Super 14?
Feel free to also write about anything else on your mind, whether it’s related to the Six Nations, Varsity Cup, transformation or the current issue of the magazine.
Send your letters (maximum 300 words) or less to judge@hsm.co.za.

Toulon – Rugby World Cup winner Bakkies Botha is joining Toulon and will arrive at the second division French club on February 26.
The 28-year-old Botha is set to sign for three months with a two-year contract an option.
Lock Botha, who plays for top South African outfit Bulls, will join up with compatriot Victor Matfield, one of the stars signed this season to make for a very impressive second row.
The 2.02m Botha, who weighs 120kg, has made 45 appearances for the Springboks.
Toulon are aiming to gain promotion into the French Top 14. They lead the second division by three points from Mont-de-Marsan.
The Bulls have neither confirmed nor denied the latest reports linking their star lock to the French club.

Saint Petersburg – The Rugby World Cup-winning Springboks have won the Laureus World Team of the Year award at a ceremony in St Petersburg on Monday.
The Boks won the World Cup for the second time after 1995 by defeating England 15-6 in the final at the Stade de France in Paris in October after going through the tournament unbeaten

Slappes,

JONAH WALKED OFF WITH MY WIFE, S14 ROOKIE CLAIMS
Promising Super 14 player Jarek Goebel thought he was entering into a lifetime commitment when he wed property manager Nadene Quirk on a perfect autumn afternoon last April.
The 23-year-old, part of the Blues squad that prepared for last night’s season opener against the Chiefs, was a picture of happiness at Auckland’s Bastion Point as he celebrated the couple’s big day with friends and family.
Now, 10 months later, Jarek’s hopes and aspirations for his future with the 27-year-old brunette have been shattered by Jonah Lomu – a man who would count among his rugby idols.
Jarek is back home in Pakuranga, east Auckland, with the parents who raised him as a Roman Catholic to believe in the sanctity of marriage while Nadene begins a new life with Lomu in Wellington.
Lomu’s wife and manager Fiona has maintained her silence since the high-profile pair announced in December that they were working through “issues in their relationship”.
At the time, they claimed their four-year marriage “had not ended” and that no other parties were involved.
But Jarek confirmed details of the 63-test veteran’s affair with Nadene when approached by Sunday News on Friday, saying he was “angry, upset and shocked” by her decision to leave him.
Although he dreams of following Jonah’s steps into the All Blacks, Jarek insisted his relationship with Nadene always came first.
“I’m not like Jonah … I mean how many girls and weddings has he had,” Jarek said.
“My marriage has always come before my sport. Family is always first. Marriage is No 1.
“I am pretty private and I don’t really want to bare my soul about how I really feel. It’s been a hard time. I could make Jonah look a ****, but I’m not going to.”
But the well-regarded winger, who made his mark with the Auckland University side, revealed how the pain of the split became almost became unbearable when Nadene turned up at a Blues training session with her superstar lover – a move that stunned Jarek and his team-mates.
“Jonah and her turned up together,” he told Sunday News. “I suppose you could say I was angry, pretty angry, really.
“I am just trying to sort myself out at the moment. Once it happened, I began doing my own thing. That’s the easiest way to get over it. As long as she is happy, that’s fine. I don’t want to look as if I am trying to bring them down. Life goes on.”
Nadene joins a list of brown-eyed beauties who have fallen for the charms of the sporting legend since he burst into the headlines at the 1995 World Cup.
Jonah would not comment on his latest love when confronted by Sunday News at the 10th anniversary celebrations of Wellington’s Te Papa Museum yesterday but admitted: “I knew this was coming.”
He left the museum for a central city apartment owned by the Quirk family.
Nadene, who has built a successful career as a property management specialist and has been used by a government agency as a role model for young Maori women, was equally reluctant to talk when contacted on her cellphone.
“I don’t really have any comments to make about anything at the moment,” she said. But when asked if the training-ground appearance had been awkward for her and her young husband, she conceded: “I suppose you could say that.”
Fiona Lomu was at home last week at the $1.35m Herne Bay house she shared with Jonah but could not be reached by Sunday News last night.
The couple married in a lavish ceremony on Waiheke Island in 2003 and Fiona stood by Jonah during the darkest days of his kidney failure, through his subsequent recovery from a transplant and his attempts at a rugby comeback.
At the height of his career, Jonah was believed to be worth in excess of $15 million.
But he has not played competitively since his brief stint with North Harbour in 2006 and has been focusing largely on his work as a global ambassador for adidas.
Fiona took over management duties from Welshman Phil Kingsley-Jones and can expect a significant financial settlement once the pair part.

The revelation in the 7 S14 games played so far has been how seriously kaaak the Brumbies are without their 2 playmakers, Gregan & Larkham.
With these 2 having gone to other shores, the Brumbies look set to be bottomdwellers !
Biggest loss of the weekend.
But before I dig too much of a hole for the Brumbies, my Bulls face the same Saders Friday night…… and there is still drastic room for improvement to be made with the Bulls !
Teams that did not look well at all this past weekend were the Highlanders, Brumbies, Cheethas….
18 Feb 2008, 17:48 pm
#36: Dis darem nice van jou om nie stormers daar by jou lysie k-k spanne by te voeg nie. wiet jou betaal? hahaha
18 Feb 2008, 17:53 pm
wp-boytjie,
18 Feb 2008, 17:57 pm
grootblousmile,
Laurie Mains picked ou r side as one of his favourites for this year based on our schedule of 7 straight gane, In comparison, the Sharks have 6 straight tough games in a roll…away.
If we plan meticulously, we can upset the Saders.
18 Feb 2008, 17:57 pm
24
or get him longer studs
18 Feb 2008, 18:01 pm
But Rome wasn’t built in a day I guess.
18 Feb 2008, 18:08 pm
McFarland is ‘n woes goeie defence coach!
Grant was pateties !
Kuun beter hierdie week sy lynstaan-ingooie heelweek freegin oefen……… farkkk !!
18 Feb 2008, 18:16 pm
Ja ou McFarland is nie ‘n man wat in die media praat nie , maar hy doen baie daar by julle behind the scenes. Ek sou James Van Der Walt bo Derick Kuun speel, maar Kuun is weer ‘n ekstra aanwins vir die breakdown , so dis n trickey ene.
Ek moet spore maak. Ons praat weer. Goed gaan
18 Feb 2008, 18:20 pm
Well deserved.
Bly julle is almal veilig terug.
18 Feb 2008, 18:21 pm

18 Feb 2008, 18:23 pm

How u keeping dude?
18 Feb 2008, 18:25 pm
keo’s looking for writers , best he just hands the site to the bloggers
18 Feb 2008, 18:27 pm
greatest and gbs,
It will be interesting this weekend to see if the Crusaders can cut loose in the dry at Loftus, or whether the Bulls will bludgeon them to death up front like last years semis. Missing Habana is a big blow to your hopes.
The Crusaders are going to look to run your big units ragged, much as they did 2 years ago when they gave your boys a wallpoing at home. I hope Wynand and co are putting in lots of catching practice this week, because knock ons may well prove to be the Bulls achilles heal this week.
Should be a cracker.
18 Feb 2008, 18:27 pm
achilles heel even…
18 Feb 2008, 18:29 pm
ruck,
I’m good thanks. I’m heading down to CT next week for a short stop. I’m trying to arrange a get together with the Stormers posse. Bod, Katman, Dawn and a few others are meeting up on Weds night. Will your fair self be able to make it?
