UCT go top

NWU-Pukke and the University of Cape Town claimed victories in the latest round of the Varsity Cup.

Pukke beat national club champions Maties 31-24 in Potchefstroom, while UCT edged UJ 34-31 in Jo’burg.

Pukke appeared to have their game wrapped when they led 28-10 in the second half, but Maties scored twice to set up an exciting finish. When the final whistle blew, the visitors were close to the tryline again, only this time Pukke’s defence stood firm.

While Pukke fullback Corné Meyer had an average night, holding on to the ball on several occasions when a try was on out wide, he kicked four penalties and two conversions for a personal tally of 16 points. Maties were well led by captain Wesley Wilkens, who scored a hat-trick.

In Jo’burg, UJ led 24-3 at half-time only to fall apart after the break. Marcello Sampson scored twice for the Cape Town side, who are now top of the Varsity Cup log.

Puk – Tries: Andries Mahoney, Lolo Waqa, Stoffel Duvenhage. Conversions: Corné Meyer (2). Penalties: Meyer (4).
Maties – Tries: Wesley Wilkens (3). Conversions: Sarel Potgieter (2), Donald Stevens. Penalty: Potgieter.

UJ – Tries: André Smith, Jaco Snyman (2). Conversions: Ryno Luus (2). Penalties: Luus (3). Drop Goal: André Smith

First………….. Good to see the UCT youngsters performing well like this. Dobbo and Fleckie must surely be doing a very great job.

Vundu, that Tackler might be from SACS is explanatory of his behaviour because they are the most insufferable sods in Cape rugby! There is a strong Bishops presence in Ikey rugby…

Those watching the match between NWU-Pukke and Maties last night, did you guys sees that No 7 flanker for Maties, Cameron Peverett? He is awesome! He is perfectly suited for the ELVs – big, fast, creative, good hands…I reckon we’ll see a lot of him in the years to come.

It might be a bit early to write off the Maties, although they aren’t playing as freely as I have seen them. The George tournament should sort out a few men from the boys. 3 matches in 5 days – eina, pyn!

Reminds me of the Easter Club Champs we used to play over Easter at Kings Park, in Durban humidity. Absolutely knackered by the end of it, and difficult to sustain if you are playing at high intensity, and above your weight category.

A great innovation, though, this Varsity league. Well done, FNB and Francois Pienaar for coming up with some great Monday evening entertainment.

TightBalls… that may be true, but remember that one of the greatest Springboks in modern history, Percy Montgomery, is a SACS old boy. Add to that Ross Skeate, Paul Delport and Isma’eel Dollie of recent years. The Ikeys no 8, Jody Birch, is a 2000 SACS matric.

Yes, Bishops did have the likes of Fleckie, and Selbourne Boome amongst others (let’s not forget the Mallets). So don’t diss the SACS men – there are more useless wankers at Wynberg and Rondebosch (who only really had Bobo and Shimange).

This year’s SACS 1st XV are going to be killers. Bishops, yes, sturdy, but they#ll be missing their beast of an 8th man Captain this year. Bring on the schoolboy rivalry!

Vundu – killer first XV this year? Excellent news! I am not in SA and unable to go see the matches:-( This cheers me up though!

Last time I checked the UCT no 8, who is also the captain, is from Bishops.

I was at the Pukke Maties game… Pukke wil win the whole damn thing.

Yes. That would be JJ Gagiano… very much a Bishops boy. Throw in Matt Turner (two tries vs Pukke), Marvin Christians (four tries vs Tuks), Mike Ledwidge, Stu Commins, JP Koster… Oh and ripping it up at S14 level, Francois Louw (Stormers flank) and Daniel Vickerman (Waratahs).
So Vundu, the SACsies have some way to go yet.

“Die SACS kom terug, hul wil nie langler bly..” is the UCT war song, just like “Rom! Rom! Rom! Stellenbosch kom!”

It’s nothing to do with SACS school.

UCT used to be the “South African College” when Stellenbosch still used to be the “Victoria College”. A very long time ago.

    Thanks Tackler,

Yes, as a SACS and UCT old boy I am well aware of the history – expect for the war-cry. The high school also does a version of it when we play our brothers in the Boland. What shames me is that we are always coming back, and not leading from the front.

Mikey – the SACS 1st XV last year only had 3 matric players, and with a 90% win ratio we should be solid this year again.

So Ziyaad, you lay claim to another South African traitor. Nice!

    Hey Zihaad

It would be nice if all these guys went to Bishops for all their schooling and not just Post Matric! 1 year at Bishops and they are all old boys!!!
