Ikeys march on

The University of Cape Town thrashed the Tshwane University of Technology 52-16 on Monday night to remain at the top of the Varsity Cup log.

Winger Matthew Turner scored a hat-trick for UCT, having grabbed a double in their match against Pukke. Ikeys are now three points clear of arch-rivals Maties at the top of the log.

TUT coach Jimmy Watt said UCT could win the competition.

“They play a true student brand of rugby and they have adapted to the new laws.,” he said. “Their skills levels are very high. It doesn’t matter if it is a back or a forward, he can get his hands through the tackle and offload to a team-mate. They move the ball around and if you miss one tackle, you stand behind your own goal-line.”

In the day’s other match in Port Elizabeth, Pukke beat Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) 26-21 in difficult conditions.

Both teams capitalised on the other’s mistakes with the first three tries scored from turn-over ball.

Pukke winger Lolo Waqa dotted down twice, but it was outside centre Paul Bosch who stood out, playing a big role in his side’s first two tries.

Ikeys – Tries: Matthew Turner (3), Tim Whitehead, Pieter Engelbrecht, Marcello Samspn, Danie van der Merwe, penalty Try. Conversions: Matthew Rosslee (6).
TUT – Try: Jannie Cloete. Conversion: Braam Pretorius. Penalties: Pretorius (3).

NMMU – Tries: Dwayne Cruickshank, Morne van der Westhuizen. Conversion: Michael Galinetti. Penalties: Galinetti (2). Drop goal: Kit Branch.

Sjambok, i can assure you the results the ikeys are achieving now have nothing to do with Dave mallet or his Brother. John Dobson and Robbie Fleck are the masterminds behind this resurgence along with an extremely talented group of under twenties from last year. the average age of the side is about 20!!!!!!!!!!!! There is however a nice blend of experience it seems with a few of the older guys from previous eras still remaining, JJ, Crusty, Mayosi ect…

Not so sure. Dave Mallett did very well Ikey’s in his 3 years at the helm. That said, I can’t help but stress the influence of two very good Bishops teams… 2005 and 2006. Though Bishops seldom actually finish ahead of all the Northern suburb schools (Paarl Boys and Paarl Gim, Paul Roos, Boland Landbou), the backlines they produce are sensational. Matt Turner scored about 30 tries for Bishops in 2006, and it looks as if he hasn’t lost his touch…
