Ikeys stay top

UCT extended their lead at the top of the Varsity Cup log with a bonus-point 38-34 win over Maties.

The victory means Ikeys moved to 21 points on the log and they virtually assured themselves of a home semi-final with two matches of the round-robin stage left. All the games were played in wet and difficult conditions, but the two Western Province teams produced excellent rugby and easily provided the best game of the day for the sparce crowd.

In the first game of the day Shimlas beat TUT 20-9, while Tukkies scored 25 unanswered points to down a 14-man Pukke 25-11. UJ moved into second spot when they outplayed NMMU 57-7 in the only one-sided game of the day.

The top seven teams all have a chance of reaching the play-offs, while NMMU are the only team left playing for pride alone.

Log (games played in brackets):

Ikeys 21 (5)

UJ 16 (5)

Maties 15 (5)

Shimlas 14 (5)

Pukke 13 (5)

Tukkies 13 (5)

TUT 9 (5)

NMMU 5 (5)

Geez, some good games. Reminds me of the old Club Champs weekends we used to have. They used to be broadcast and some legendary talent was picked from there.

If ever a team milked the ELVS, its the UCT team.
Now if only the Stormers can give the Blues a similar lesson.

    Sorry,

I have lost touch with the SA university setup. I know RAU became the Univ of Jo’burg. Is NMMU another acronym for Natal Univ? What is TUT? What happened to UPE and Wits?
