Varsity Cup semis sorted

UCT will play NWU-Pukke and Maties will host Tukkies in the semi-finals of the Varsity Cup.
The two matches are exact repeats of the first round games played six weeks ago, and if those are anything to go by spectators can expect some entertaining rugby. Log-leaders UCT’s only loss came against Pukke when they went down 17-23, but they have since won six in a row. In that game Ikeys were down 5-23 with eight minutes to go, but two late tries closed the gap to six points and one final surge left Pukke hanging on for the win.
Down the road in Stellenbosch, second-placed Maties take on Tukkies. The sides drew 31-all in the opening encounter of the tournament in front of 17 000 suppprters at Coetzenburg, and in that game Tukkies came back from 5-31 down and scored 26 unanswered points – including a conversion with the last kick of the game – to secure the stalemate.
All four teams will have learnt much about their opposition and the ELVs, and more tight, intriguing matches can be expected.

I don’t count my Ikey chickens before they hatch. I’ve spent 50 years with more tears than joy when it came to clashes with Maties. It’s not over until its over.
I remember prop Doug Claxton scoring a try in the Ikey victory in 1976. It was something to savour. Chris Pope and Peter Whipp there too. I think Bob Bolus was at 10. The party went on for days.
I really hope UCT pull through.

a star studded ikeys team had it for the taking against the maties years when hooker and captain johnny joubert called for a short line out on his on line …maties luckily scored and drew the game!!!!! hopefully ikeys will make the most of the opportunity in the varsity cup!!!prove me wrong ikeys

Dont write maties off.If they get it together and bring their best players to the the party they can beat any team.In the last few years maties are definately up on ikeys and they have been close games.

I was also at the Intervarsity at Newlands in the rain in 1976. The flyhalf was Tim Brukman, if I remember correctly. That game was as big as a test match.

Unfair advantage. Bishops and UCT have been playing ELV’s for decades under the tutelage of Basil Bey. Makes you wonder why they don’t ask him to help out at The Stormers now that his style of rugby is “in.”
