Ikeys are not prepared to play the inaugural Varsity Cup final against Maties in Stellenbosch.

The University of Cape Town, who were ranked seventh before the tournament began, finished top of the log ahead of arch-rivals Stellenbosch University. But because the floodlights at UCT aren’t good enough for a televised night match, the organisers decided before the semi-finals to hold the final at the Danie Craven Stadium. UCT then beat Pukke 32-31 in the first semi-final, before Maties edged Tukkies 47-44.

Ikeys on Monday decided they would rather play the final under lights at Newlands, which is just down the road from their university. WP MD Rob Wagner said he was happy to throw the gates open, only for the Varsity Cup organisers to insist that the game be played on a campus.

While the decider is now officially taking place in Stellenbosch next Monday at 6.45pm, Ikeys are keen to play at UCT at 2:30pm, with the game televised (delayed) at 6.45pm on SuperSport.

“I feel very sorry for Ikeys who topped the log and deserve to play the final at home,” former WP flyhalf Gareth Wright, who has played for UCT in recent years, told keo.co.za. “Would the Stormers play a home Super 14 final at Loftus? Of course not. I don’t see why they can play a Varsity Cup semi-final at 2:30pm but not a final. Maties should come to UCT and try to win the final fair and square.”

    thanks katman, sorry, lekker deur die kak vandag. yeah, they should play it earlier at UCT and just hope it aint as hot as it was yesterday.

    i am still happy cos i get to see the game live now and my team has a better chance of winning.

    Play the game at Newlands! And give each Uni a side of the field for their supporters. UCT can choose because they ended top of the log.

    UCT are playing fantastic rugby under Dobson and Fleck. The one team in SA who really knows the ELV’s. They dserve to play it at home or where they want. Why do Maties always get their way in SA Rugby?

    WP, after all, does play in UCT colours…hehehehe.

    Kerneels, may I remind you that UCT is rated in the top 200 unis in the world.
    Maties is far outside of that list.
    Our campus is also prettier, higher up, and have hotter women.
    Oh, did I mention the number of A rated scientists and world class production of research across all faculties?

    Ikeys are definitely the team in SA who completely play the ELVs the way they were meant to be played.

    If that doesn’t work out just don’t play the final at all, let them share the trophy like true gentlemen. I belive we have reached a stalemate situation and in the interest of rugby we should let this final go unplayed. You will all agree that that is the only solution to this dilemma..

    Why doesn’t UCT sort out their lights?

    They deserve to play the final at home but their facilities for a game this size are worse than embarrassing.

    5,000 spectators max, massive parking problem, potentially (with a little rain) a mud pit of a field, dull lights, balls on highway, etc etc

    A potential disaster of a final if hosted at UCT. Not a good end to what has been a great tournament.

    Which is why we play it Newlands.
    Its a fitting venue given that its the home of WP, who are usually Maties dressed in Ikey colours.
    Besides being one of the nicest stadiums in the world.

Een ding kan niemand oor stry nie en dit is dat die Craven Stadium ‘n baie lekkerder stadium is vir studente rugby en die gepaardgaande pissup as Nuweland. Daai ou klomp fosiele wat daar om Nuweland bly gaan buitendien in hul broeke kak as 20 000studente die strate invaar, en gaan Rob Wagner die ouens toelaat om die sponsor se produk op die pawiljoen te gebruik?     I think Ikeys are concerned that their time keeper wont be able to man the final hooter.

    When that game ended against Pukke, the time elapsed was close on 88m30s.

    Have to admit uct campus is K@k compared to stellies.you can not compare the dc to the so called green mile.Ikeys must remember that the varsity cup is sponsored by FNB and Steinhoff.Old maties are in charge of both the companies.Would be unfair if had to get played at dc but anything can happen in final,so I say make it newlands.
