Third time lucky for Boks

Third time lucky for Boks

The Springbok Sevens team beat New Zealand 15-7 in the Cup Final of the Adelaide tournament.

This was the third successive time the two teams have met in the final, and the victory meant the Springboks broke the All Blacks’ 47-match winning streak. The Springboks’ extra-time semi-final win over Samoa was expected to have a negative effect on the players in the final, but they came out storming to score two tries in the opening five minutes.

Robert Ebersohn, the 19-year-old recruit playing in his first year of international Sevens, scored his sixth try of the competition when he ran 50 metres to out-sprint the cover defence to give the Boks a 5-0 lead. Man of the Tournament Fabian Juries scored another great counter-attacking try to extend the lead going into the shed.

The South Africans exhibited a committed and aggressive defence throughout the match which rattled the All Blacks, forcing them into uncharacteristic errors. However a Victor Vito score early in the second stanza would have had South African coach Paul Treu worried as the Kiwis narrowed the lead to three.

But Juries got his second try to seal the Springboks’ first Cup title since December 2006 in Dubai.

  • 5.superBul: Reply to this comment

Most South Africans don’t see a coloured coach and a mixed team.
We just see a South African team that has won.
    It is a good feeling.
You should try it some time.

Coming from a staunch Bulls supporter like SuperBul we must agree, although this is exactly my point. The Bulls need a new captain. FdP is soooo predictable. And he is no leader, klaar!

Always good fun to listen to a Kiwi commentator slowly becoming more anxious and panicked as his previously invincible Black team chokes.

Well played SA by the way. Good game, as was the semi against Samoa, and the other semi NZ v Fiji.

Well done Bokkies. I have been very critical of Paul Treu about his comments after the Hong Kong 7′s loss. But it seems he got his players better prepared this time. Or maybe the NZ team is just a bit tired of winning and not so motivated as they should have been. Or maybe over confident. They didn’t looked as polished as in the previous tournaments.

But well done Paul Treu and your boytjies. Enjoy the win.

Latho looks stuffed for the season Koos … no matter, Reds have already done better this year I think than last year’s debacle. Cheetahs were better than us, we have a long way to go.
I got a late ticket to see the skyblue sheila’s triumph last night and they played pretty well I must say, even Donut at tighthead, and thats the second time (1st v Wellington)Palu has dominated highly rated NZ oppo. Axing the coach always a good move it seems for Aus S14 teams, we should have got rid of Eddie earlier.

  • 35.lapoftherugbygods: Reply to this comment

I’d like too know who the Kiwi commentators were. I watched in NZ and we had a Pom and a Aussie commentating here.
Full credit to Paul Treu. The game plan was executed magnificently by the SA team. Tremendous effort to come out and beat a team which hadn’t lost in a year. Hope Sa go on with it. They are clearly the 2nd best team in the series.
The NZ sevens team is not the All Blacks . That name is only used for the 15 man team.
SA obviously has speed and flair out wide. If this translated to the 15 a side game think you will see more SA teams win the S14.

#20, Well Said . . . Couldn’t have said it better myself, if they are the best and representing the green ‘n gold, they have my 100% support too.

Well done Paul and the boys, once again it was defence that clinched a final.

Paul Treu and Neil Powell did SA proud with the way they spoke after the win.
They were respectfull and gracious in defeat.
They would have won many friends in their attitude.
    Well done to both men.

  • 39.tight head: Reply to this comment

Well done boys. Thats how you beat these guys- in the face all the time! Don’t forget it.

A nee a! Superbul, hoekom so swartgallig? Jou Bulle speel rugby. Hou moed broer! :)

  • 43.skopskiet: Reply to this comment

  • 44.skopskiet: Reply to this comment

Pity I didn’t get the chance to see the 7′s, must say I do enjoy when Suzie gets to perform her magic every now and again.

    Skoppie,
For me it was a clear choice, watch an inevitable NZ win………or on the other channel watch the 7 stages of rock. Featuring Pink Floyd.

    Interviews,
    Echo’s,
    Dark Side,
    The Wall.

    Go the Floyd.

The Lunatic is on the grass…..

Well done 7′s Boks, great win against all odds. This was a brilliant game to watch, was on the edge of my seat and screaming for the Boks throughout.

Just one negative – do these okes ever practice their drop-kicks, coz it sure didn’t look like it.

But nevermind that, enjoy the win guys, you deserve it.
