Akhtar demolishes Dehli
13 May 2008
IPL debutant Shoaib Akhtar took 4-11 as the Kolkata Knight Riders edged the Delhi Daredevils by 23 runs at Eden Gardens.
The Pakistani outcast scythed through Delhi’s top order, dismissing Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and AB de Villiers early in the innings – and that spell played a massive role in restricting them to 110 all out in pursuit of Kolkata’s 133. It was the Daredevil’s fourth straight defeat and the Knight Riders’ third successive victory, placing them in contention for a semi-final place.
Medium pace bowler Laxmi Shukla wiped out the tail to finish with figures of 3-6 in five deliveries. The Delhi batting attack struggled to impose themselves and only Salman Butt (48) and David Hussey (31) ensured that they posted a defendable total. Ultimately it proved sufficient against a batting attack that have regressed badly since their outstanding start to the tournament.
