Treu’s men win Plate

The Springbok Sevens team beat Scotland 14-5 in the Plate final in Edinburgh.
The Boks beat France 19-0 in the semi-final, but were knocked out of the Cup competition earlier in the day by England – going down 10-0. Paul Treu’s squad looked a jaded unit throughout, but picked themselves up against the motivated hosts in the final, who they had beaten by a solitary point yesterday.
This secures second spot in the IRB Sevens World Series for the Boks behind New Zealand, who beat England 24-14 in the Cup final.

What I don’t understand with all of these plates, bowls, cups and pots is this:
Is it better to win the plate than to lose in the cup final? In the one case you bring home a trophy, and in the other you go home empty handed.
Surely it doesn’t make sense to reward the guys who came 5th or something in the entire competition with a trophy, while sending the runners up home with a mere thanks-for-coming.
That’s like , in the Olympics, giving the silver medal to the guy who comes third, and the bronze to the fifth placed runner. Bad luck if you were a bit better than third, but not good enought to come 1st.
Seriously, what’s the point of it all? Otherwise guys should just throw games to get a plate rather than going through to be a losing finalist in the cup competition.
I reckon its just a stupid gimmick to get the also-rans to feel wanted.

In
this series, you get more points for finnishing runner-up than winning the Plate.
Wouldn’t one fancy a chance at a Series win rather than a mere Bowl or Plate?

And that Tackles is going to last a few more years. We can contest this sevens cup business in a week or so… or when ever the next 7′s is on again… 7′s is not the be all and end all. Not winning the WC in decades…. well….

Anything less than winning the tournament means nothing.
I couldnt believe we lost to England, we are far better than them. Our 7′s team can be BRILLIANT one day, and mediocre the other.

I didn’t watch the Plate final, but watched the England game, and was dismayed to see the game plan used. Sevens is all about tap and go, cut and thrust, creating gaps and space out wide. I have played Sevens at provincial level (a moer of a long time ago) and never once did we consider kicking for touch, and particularly from a penalty. This is especially so, when your side is 2 tries down, and the clock is ticking. What a waste of precious time. It was as if the side did not back its attacking ability with ball in hand.
A far cry from the game plan used in the Chester coaching era.

Just to clarify, I am talking about the Springboks vs England quarter-final match.
