Cowan told to lay off the drink
All Blacks scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan has been fined (NZ)$3000 and has been ordered to stop drinking as a condition of employment by the NZRU.

The All Blacks coaches initially left the position of backup No 9 open, waiting to hear the outcome of the Cowan misconduct hearing that took place in Wellington on Tuesday. He has now been cleared to take his place on the bench.

The punishments come after Cowan has been in three incidents over the past few weeks, and he’ll now receive alcohol counselling.

“I thank the NZRU, my All Black team-mates, All Black management, my family and friends for their ongoing support,” Cowan told reporters outside the hearing. “I’m very fortunate to be given another chance. This is my problem – nobody else’s.

“I’m currently in the process of taking steps to fix it,”

What a terrible decision. 3 All Blacks should not be playing this weekend!

I think Cowan should have got 5 games. Kaino should have also got 5 and Luaki 1 for the drink driving charges.

Bring back no nonsence Robbie Deans …. this is a farce!

You forget that the Aussies have their own record of indiscretions as well – even the captain Stirlo went out late in Italy last year…..

Glass houses and stones, and all that…

    Church,

Are you one of those Red&Black supporters that are now going to support the Wallabies??

This is ridiculous. These boys should receive some form of punishment from NZRU. This behaviour will continue until they do.

#3 church – like chch but pronounceable: Wonder if the disipline might have been brought down harder had they had Kelleher or an in-form Weepu to fall back on?????

To get a Kiwi to stop drinking will even be harder than for the ABs to win the WC. Binge drinking is part of NZ culture.

Wtf ” it is my problem” – problem is when he is drunk he behaves like a hooligan and then it becomes everybody in the immediate vicinity’s problem. NZRU lacks serious backbone

petoors #10 : I think you could apply your logic to all the sides ….. you can’t tell me that a lot of this stuff doesn’t go on in all teams, yes even in Bok teams but do you get to hear bout it ! You wish it wouldn’t but hey its life, if you ban everyone for drinking a bit too much gees, no one would be playing.
    magog #11 got it right.

    #7 BOKKE:

Cowan has been fined NZ$3000 ( about US$2250 ). And told he is on his very last chance.
He has been ordered to refrain from all Alcohol, and to get help for a long to term solution to his problem.

#13 breakaway: It is not the drinking it is how they are drinking – as the ads would say

#11 magog: I can guarantee you that no Bok would appear for a third offense and walk away with a slap with a wet bus ticket and a promise to stop drinking – yeah right Cowan is going to sip a cranberry juice while his mates hit the turps.

And so you blame GH for all this and not the NZRU.
Honestly your crusade against GH is becoming a bit over the top.By any chance do you have pictures of Deans on your bedroom wall.

The easiest thing to do would have been to sack him. That they were courageous enough to try and help him should not be condemned.
