Bulls’ Bok duo benched
9 Sep 2008
Victor Matfield and Pierre Spies will play off the bench for the Blue Bulls against Boland at Loftus on Friday.
It was felt that Matfield and Spies needed a break after playing major roles for the Springboks in the Tri-Nations.
Springbok scrumhalf Fourie du Preez will start in a side that features a number of changes from the one that fronted the Sharks in Durban last week. Danie Rossouw, Bryan Habana and Wynand Olivier weren’t considered due to injury, which allows Juandré Kruger, John Mametsa and Wayne Julies to start.
Wikus van Heerden takes over the captaincy from Matfield and Dewald Potgieter starts at No 8. Kruger partners Wilhelm Steenkamp in the second row, while Mametsa will be in a back three together with Tiger Mangweni and Akona Ndungane. Zane Kirchner returns from injury and will play off the bench.
Deon Stegmann earns a well deserved break break and this sees Pedrie Wannenburg operating at blindside flank, with Van Heerden assuming openside duties.
At tighthead Rayno Gerber swaps places with Werner Kruger, Gurthrö Steenkamp will start at loosehead prop and Bandise Maku as the hooker reserve.
Blue Bulls – 15 Tiger Mangweni; 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 Marius Delport, 12 Wayne Julies, 11 John Mametsa; 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Fourie du Preez; 8 Dewald Potgieter, 7 Wikus van Heerden (c), 6 Pedrie Wannenburg, 5 Wilhelm Steenkamp, 4 Juandré Kruger, 3 Rayno Gerber, 2 Derick Kuün, 1 Gurthrö Steenkamp.
Subs: 16 Bandise Maku, 17 Werner Kruger, 18 Victor Matfield, 19 Pierre Spies, 20 Heini Adams, 21 Burton Francis, 22 Zane Kirchner.

Stegman got two breaks?
Any news as to the extent of the Habs and Rossouw injuries Ryan?
Both have been injured while on Bok duty too but played last weekend.

Interesting indeed. One would have thought that a start against Boland would be what he needed.

Zane Kirschner, the most overrated player in SA.
I wonder if Chilliboy isn’t injured again?

#10 fish out of water: That would really be rediculous. Also wonder about the Lions guy who speared the Valke guy. He got a red card, but it was way worse than the one Vermaak did against the Cheetahs. Should be at least two weeks.

Really? Bullshit that is… what the hell was he thinking? With that swinging stiff arm across his Bok team mates head. He should have been banned for at least 2 weeks.

This is not a game , this is going to be chicken murder lol. Poor Bolanders , no more players for next year and a few players are retiring down there.

You won’t feel sorry for them if they deny WP a bonuspoint in two weeks time in the “Plaasdam” at Wellington. That is their main aim for the season.

Boland will struggle to run with the ball. Used to mud crawling.

Chillie must be injured. He had strong impact when he came on. Also hope Burton is brought on sooner than later, he has potential. Wannenberg I still believe should be in Bok squad.

#16 Robzim: Plaasdam lol , nah that’s not going to happen. But yes that’s a plaasdam in winter when it rains. Hope not it’s going to rain that day because wp don’t play good rugby in the rain.

See Schalk Burger got cleared on technicality. He was carded twice and as he then got red card commissioner felt he had already been punished. Can’t wait for him and Lobberts to be in same team, against mine. Very intimidating then very off the field.
