Jano returns for Lions
11 Sep 2008
Scrumhalf Jano Vermaak is one of four changes to the Lions team for Saturday’s match against Griquas.
Vermaak was banned for a week for his spear-tackle on Fabian Juries in the Cheetahs game, but resumes his role at No 9 due to the concussion to Chris Jonck. Centre Doppies la Grange will cover the scrumhalf position if Vermaak sustains an injury.
Louis Ludik wins back his place at fullback, this time due to Jaco van Schalkwyk’s suspension – also the result of a spear-tackle, but this time against the Valke. Dusty Noble returns to sit on the bench.
In the pack, Justin Wheeler gets a chance on the flank as Franco van der Merwe moves to lock due to Gerhard Mostert’s season-ending shoulder injury. Ross Geldenhuys, who was on a strength and conditioning programme before sitting on the bench for the last two games, gets an opportunity to start ahead of Lawrence Sephaka at tighthead.
Lions – 15 Louis Ludik, 14 Michael Killian, 13 Jaco Pretorius, 12 Doppies la Grange, 11 Trompie Nontshinga, 10 Earl Rose, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Ernst Joubert, 7 Justin Wheeler, 6 Cobus Grobbelaar (c), 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Anton van Zyl, 3 Ross Geldenhuys, 2 Willie Wepener, 1 Heinke van der Merwe.
Subs: 16 Ethienne Reynecke, 17 Lawrence Sephaka, 18 Lubabalo Mtyanda, 19 Derrick Minnie, 20 Louis Strydom, 21 Rayno Benjamin, 22 Dusty Noble.

Jeez they have more suspensions than injuries.
As soon as one is back another is out!

At last, “Giant” Mtyanda gets a place on the bench. Please let him get a run. Please.

Willie Wepener has really impressed this season.
I am sure that the team doctor will keep his medical bag closed and locked with Ryno sitting on the bench doing nothing.

Great way to get some time off…just spear-tackle someone
Is this rugby’s equivalent of going to “my grandfather’s funeral”?

Loosehead
He’s a beast. Players like Mtyanda, Mabeta at the Bulls and Hlungwane at WP need to be invested in and groomed for the big time. I’m telling you, these guys are talented. You don’t find black SA locks easily.

#7 puff: I look forward to seeing him play. Lions are ‘short’ of locks at the moment.

Senekal and Mostert are an abrasive combo.
Franco Van Der Merwe’s a decent player too, but I think Loffie will need him to cover flank in next year’s Super 14.

The Lions have impressed me so far this year. They will be in the semi’s, and then perhaps in Bloem for the final.

#18 King Cheetah: why do people hate Province so much??
I’m not old enough to have lived in the “Golden Years…” Was it once something that happened in the past? Enlighten me….please…
I do not hate any team, but I hate losing against any team…
Anyway, I hope Province just to things right for longer periods of time. They never seem impress throughout a competition. They are still my team, and I think the Lions better watch their spot, cause WP is coming!!!
(PS: I’ve said this before, and I’ve been let down before. Guess I’m putting my belief in Province once again…)

#21 Gambit25: The Cheetahs and Lions will go through to the semi finals together with the bulls and sharks. Province are using there “the boks werent here” excuse for being so far behind on points. WHY DID THEY LOSE AGAINST GRIEKWAS????? Don’t worry, your poacher will buy some Cheetahs and Lions players to strenghten your S14 squad.

Has anyone else on here heard about the signing of the USA flanker Todd Clever for the lions next year? It seems South African teams are responding to the exodus of players by singing foreigners of their own. Living in the US and coming from jo’burg I am excited about this singing. Now all they need is to sign my friend Z ngwenya and have a quasi eagles team playing for the lions!!!
lol, just wondering what you guys think of that

Go LOFFIE !!! Ek het lankal gedink dis tyd dat ons begin Talent aankoop.

sorry ed, I left SA when I was 13. I can’t speak afrikaans. I don’t know if you are responding to my comment about todd clever or not, but I am really excited to see him play in a lions jersey. I think all the eagles should play in the super 14. They will have a real proffessional tournament to play in, hone their skills and stay fit for international rugby, and then they will be available for international duty from july onward. Maybe then the eagles could beat munster and sin the setanta challenge cup… when was the last time the eagles even won a game? I don’t know, I wish rugby was bigger here in the US

#29 miteemunkee: He is indeed going to the Lions. I myself moved to the US 4 months ago. Will be interesting to see how he does.

that’s cool. nice to make your acquaintance. Where do you live? I am here in texas. Some say it is another country all its own… I am quite annoyed with this country though because I have been here almost 9 years and I can’t get a greencard. anyways I better go. I am actually at work but it isn’t very busy…
11 Sep 2008, 18:46 pm
Boston for me. The company is going to apply for a greencard on my behalf, so hopefully that works. Where in SA did you live?
11 Sep 2008, 19:39 pm
I lived somewhere near johannesburg, weltevreden to be exact. I went to weltevreden park primary school. I would have gone to Allen Glenn. I don’t know if that helps you at all. lol.
