Papa Percy could start at pivot
1 Oct 2008
Flyhalf Peter Grant is doubtful for WP’s all-important clash with the Lions and Allister Coetzee has confirmed Percy Montgomery is the official back up.
Montgomery signed for WP and the Stormers earlier this year, and joined the Cape union following the Boks’ exit from the Tri-Nations. After four matches, Montgomery could make his long-awaited return to the WP starting side, and it could be at flyhalf.
“I have full confidence in Percy, he is a Test flyhalf,” captain Jean de Villiers told this website, alluding to the last time when Montgomery played 10 for the Boks back in 2001. “I will be there to guide him a bit and it is a position that entails a lot more responsibility, but the guy has 102 Tests to his name. I think he’ll be fine.”
Grant has been unable to train due to an ankle injury, and Coetzee said a final call on his inclusion will be made on Friday. Joe Pietersen has played flyhalf for WP this season but is already filling the void left by the injured Tonderai Chavhanga on the right wing. Chavhanga has a hamstring tear and will not be risked.
Ricky Januarie is back in the mix after missing the bout in Boland because of his wedding. Jean de Villiers has recovered from illness and will bring some creativity to the back division.
In the forwards, Adriaan Fondse makes a timely return from a rib injury, while Brian Mujati is over his arm ailment. Schalk Brits is preferred over Deon Fourie as the starting hooker.
Fondse’s recovery sees AJ Venter moving to the bench where he will cover lock and loose-forward. Coetzee has decided to include a second front row on the bench, but Fourie’s introduction at hooker later in the game could see Brits shifting to the back row.
Western Province - 15 Conrad Jantjes, 14 Joe Pietersen, 13 Sireli Naqelevuki, 12 Jean de Villiers (c), 11 Wylie Human, 10 Peter Grant/ Percy Montgomery, 9 Ricky Januarie, 8 Luke Watson, 7 Francois Louw, 6 Schalk Burger, 5 Andries Bekker, 4 Adriaan Fondse, 3 Brian Mujati, 2 Schalk Brits, 1 Wicus Blaauw.
Subs: 16 Deon Fourie, 17 Schalk Ferreira, 18 JC Kritzinger, 19 AJ Venter, 20 Bolla Conradie, 21 Percy Montgomery/ Gio Aplon, 22 Morgan Newman.

What are the chances that we would again see a few uncontested scrums this Saturday? Last Saturday there were some towards the end of the match. And yet it seems that Blaauw, Kirsten and Ferreira are all fit to play again. Can somebody please explain this to me?

Kirsten = Kritzinger

Can somebody tell me how many times (and against which teams) have we seen uncontested scrums from WP/Stormers during the past year?

How wrong for a legend like Percy to end his season, and maybe his career in a side full of pansies that have to resort to trying to change venues’ and dubious underhand tactics like trying to dock the Cheetah’s points.
How the mighty have fallen!!!!

LWhy is it such a nightmare trying to log into keo? Wp pansies? Did u check the s14 log bra. Where are the cheetahs and where are the stormers? The stormers will always be in with a shot of reaching the semi’s while the vrystaat will always be woodenspoon contenders.

#306 Wezwp: Ha Ha we are talkin CC rugby here lad, and the WP have been pathetic in the CC, despite having a budget that the Cheetah’s could only dream of, you still can’t cut it. And it’s only last years S14, that you were sort of average. Prior to that they were just as piss poor

#309 Cheetah 4 Eva: Everybody has a shot at reaching the semi’s!! The WP just happen to miss out mostly, cos they are always rebuilding for next year!! Well they have been rebuilding for the past 6 years anyway. But then so have the Cheetah’s, except, they rebuild annually, and win the CC

A full strength province will destroy vrystaat and that’s the bottom line, besides the currie cup tournament ain’t up to scratch to what it once was when wp dominated.don’t be surprised if province sneak into the semi’s and win the cc altogether

I will need to know every detail of Percy’s performance at 21. He may just startle the critics.
Papa Percy is the worst, most grating headline I have read on this site!!!

Sounds like Butch got the better of Cipriani tonight, the Boks might do well to keep him around even if they don’t start him.

#313 So this is rock bottom: indeed, thats Bath top of the Premiership with 16 tries in 4 games. Who says Butch can’t play expansive rugby?

“Coetzee has decided to include a second front row on the bench”
You need to have a front row on the field before you can start referring to those on the bench as 2nd.

SA are heavily into “recycling”.

#311 Wezwp: You make me laugh, WP have been at full strength before, and got their assess whipped!! It’s hysterical that a big union like the WP with millions in player budgets, with Springboks in nearly every position, can’t perform.
Besides how can you use full strength to refer to a team with players like Broken Harris and Fluke Watson, that won’t even make the Cheetah’s Vodacom Cup side

#315 Wezwp: If Percy was an Afrikaans tutor I would be his perfect pupil.
Come next June he will be looking for something to do!
